Samsung today announced its new 110-inch MicroLED TV in Korea, and it’s so new it doesn’t even have a model name. The “MicroLED” portion is the big improvement here: using a grid of incredibly small, micrometer-fine LED backlighting, MicroLED should compete with (or even surpass) the contrast and picture quality of expensive OLEDs. panels. It also claims a life of up to 100,000 hours thanks to synthetic (non-organic) materials.
Samsung first showed MicroLED backlights on the even more incredible “The Wall” display (up to 292 inches), but this is the first time they appear in a standard TV form factor. MicroLEDs should be available on smaller screens in the future, and will inevitably appear first on the high-end TV lines.
There’s not a lot of technical info in Samsung’s announcement: it has 4K resolution and HDR processing, plus a 5.1 speaker setup integrated into the screen itself, no soundbar required. It will be sold in the first quarter of 2021. There is no price – if you have to ask, you can’t afford it.
