Set custom backgrounds for individual WhatsApp chats so that each discussion looks its own «Smartphones :: Gadget Hacks

One of the best features of WhatsApp is that you can change the default wallpaper for all chats. There’s no reason to stick with the default WhatsApp wallpapers when you can text an image of literally anything. In a newer WhatsApp update, you can take it a step further by setting custom backgrounds for individual chats and personalizing any text thread you have.

You can find the individual chat backgrounds in WhatsApp version 2.20.130 for iOS, which was released on November 30, 2020. So if you are using an iPhone, make sure your app is updated to the latest version to get this new customization feature.

The latest stable version of WhatsApp on Android does not have the feature, but you can get it in the WhatsApp Beta. Individual chat backgrounds first appeared in beta version 2.20.207.1

on Nov. 16, so every beta since that one will have it; version 2.20.207.7 is the last version of this article. The WhatsApp Beta for Android is full, but you can find WhatsApp beta APKs on APKMirror and use our how to install apps from APKs if you need help.

Set chat-specific wallpapers on iOS

On iOS, open the individual chat, then tap the person or group’s name at the top. Then select “Background and sound”, followed by “Choose a new background”. On the wallpaper picker screen, choose your wallpaper from one of the provided options and tap “Set” to confirm.

Repeat the process if you want to remove this custom background. If you want to go back to the background chosen for all your other chats, which can be different for light and dark modes, go back to ‘Choose a new background’ for the specific thread and then tap ‘Remove custom background’.

Set chat-specific wallpapers on Android

On Android, open the individual chat, tap the vertical ellipse in the top right corner and select “Wallpaper”. Next, tap on ‘Change’ and then choose a wallpaper from the options as you normally would. Once you’ve made your selection, tap ‘Set wallpaper’.

Now you should get a prompt with a few options. The first is if you want the background to be for the current single chat only. The second option applies the background for all chats in WhatsApp’s current theme, be it light or dark (learn more about backgrounds in light and dark mode). Neither option overrides other individual chat backgrounds that have already been set.

If you set a thread-specific background but want to change it, repeat the process. You are not asked to choose between the current chat or all chats as before; you will only see that option the first time you change the background of a conversation.

To revert the chat-specific background to the one that all other chats use by default, go back to the thread’s background options and tap “Remove custom background”. Tap “Delete” to finish and WhatsApp will restore the chat to the default light and dark backgrounds. Do not confuse this option with the “Default Wallpaper” option, which will replace your chat background with WhatsApp’s default wallpaper, not the one you used previously.
