Set up your Echo Show 5 so that you can operate your smart home devices.

Do you have a new Echo Show 5 or original Echo Show ? Congratulations. Now you just have to use it. The good news is that the smart speaker from Amazon with a screen provides a passage for setting up the device. The bad news: they don't necessarily show you all the settings. Fortunately, these two Echoes are very similar and once you have mastered the settings, the rest will be a breeze.

The most striking difference between the Echo Show ($ 230 at Amazon) and other Amazon products (such as the Echo Studio Echo Dot with clock Amazon Echo ) is the touchscreen. That said, you can watch Amazon Prime shows (if you have a Prime account ) and movies on your Echo Show from wherever your device is connected. You can also take photos with the front camera to put on your home screen.

While you can ask Alexa for help to turn on the lights or music, you should probably know how to Echo Show in case you accidentally turn off the microphone. If you have the Echo Show 5 ($ 80 at Amazon) I also recommend turning on the camera's privacy shutter so that you don't accidentally take a picture of yourself. This is what you need to know to use your Echo Show.

What you need

The initial installation process takes less than 5 minutes, but if a software update is pending, expect about 15 minutes. If you sit down to set up your Echo Show or Show 5, make sure you have your Wi-Fi network name and password with your Amazon login details.

You do not need your phone or other device for installation – it is all done on the display of the Echo Show itself.

Connecting and getting started

Once you have connected the Echo Show, it will start and you will immediately be asked to connect to your Wi-Fi network. The Echo Show and Show 5 do not have an Ethernet port, so Wi-Fi is the only option. Enter your WiFi network information and then log in to your Amazon account when prompted.

You must then register your device at amazon.com/code. Your Echo Show gives you the code that you have to enter. Once the code has been accepted, you can continue with your Echo Show and confirm your time zone and have the Echo Show checked by a software update.

Finally there is a short video that shows you what you can do with the Echo Show. Look at it, it actually contains some very useful info. For example, you see how you can adjust the watch face.

Adjust settings on the device

With the Echo Show connected to your Amazon account, you can manage various settings from the app Alexa on your phone or directly on the device.

We suggest diving into the settings of the Echo Show itself. There are a few extra settings options on the Echo Show that relate to the home screen that you may want to adjust.

Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Settings icon .

Tap and scroll through the various settings screens to adjust how the device works for you. For example, you do not want the cards on the home screen to rotate constantly. Or you may not want your daily briefing to be displayed sporadically. You can change these settings under Settings > Start screen > Start card Preferences for the original Echo Show. If you have the Echo Show 5, go to Settings > Home & Clock > Home Content and swipe the toggle switch to turn content on or off.

Another option that makes sense to change immediately is the theme. In Settings > Display > Theme you can choose a photo background, a light background with dark text or a dark background with light text. For your Echo Show 5 go to Settings > Home & Clock > Clock > and choose from backgrounds to adjust.
