When it comes to home upgrades, you may be thinking about things like updating appliances or adding new fixtures in your bathroom. However, one of the most popular home upgrades in 2020 was simpler and much more affordable: smart lighting.
Apartment Therapy spoke with Kaitlyn Payne, chief designer at Basicspace, about which upgrades were the most popular last year. The designer said she saw more people asking for extra outlets and smart lights.
And luckily, smart lighting is a fairly easy and affordable upgrade. According to Payne, you can get lights that you can control from your phone for as little as $ 1
While a hub and lighting system like the Philips Hue platform is on the pricier side (you can expect to pay at least a few hundred dollars for a starter kit, accompanying lights, and accessories), you can easily (and more affordably) test the water. To do this, just grab a few standard Wi-Fi bulbs (no hub) for less than $ 10 each.
Better yet, not only can both Hue bulbs and the cheaper Wi-Fi kind be controlled through systems like Google Home and Amazon’s Alexa, but you can add some color to your space thanks to color-changing bulbs. Additionally, since neither system is hardwired, they are both tenant-friendly.
If you’re considering an upgrade to your home this year, a quick light switch may be the way to go. Curious about the other upgrade trends for 2020? To view the full list, go to Apartment Therapy.
