If a new report is correct, you may soon be able to play a smattering of mobile games on Snapchat between all these gay snaps you take off your dog to bark in their own shadow.
The news comes from Cheddar, who reports that Snapchat will announce the platform, codenamed "Project Cognac", at its partner summit on April 4 in Los Angeles. Cheddar also reports having seen an invitation to the event (I suppose mine was lost in the post) containing the slogan, "Less talk. More plays."
Snapchat has not publicly commented on the report; Mashable has come out for further details.
A new game platform at Snapchat seems to be a logical conclusion for anyone who has followed the company over the past year. It was almost a year ago that Snapchat rolled out its AR game function, "Snappables", which allowed users to play games while taking ridiculous souls of themselves.
Since then, the Information reported the development of a Snap game platform in June 2018 and earlier in 2019, CNET reported that the company had invested in Prettygreat, the studio responsible for the popular Fruit Ninja game.
All this has happened against the backdrop of the investment in Snapchat by the Chinese company Tencent, who previously said gaming is a new potential way to the revenue of the company. (Tencent also owns Riot Games and has made significant investments in US game development and publishing interests.)
So, it seems inevitable at this point. I just hope that the people involved are ready enough to develop a game with the dancing hot dog because it is not the hero we deserve, but it is the hero we need.
