Spotify on Apple's response to the App Store Dispute: "Every monopolist will suggest that they have done nothing wrong"

On Wednesday, Spotify announced an anti-trust complaint against Apple with the European Commission on unfair App Store practices. Apple responded two days later and noticed the complaint as "misleading rhetoric" and claimed that "Spotify wants all the benefits of a free app without being free."

The word war has since continued. In a statement to Variety Spotify said "every monopolist suggests that they have done nothing wrong" and that Apple's response was "fully in line" with their expectations.

Spotify's statement:

Every monopolist will suggest that they have done nothing wrong and will argue that they have the best interests of competitors and consumers. In this way, Apple's response to our complaint to the European Commission is not new and fully in line with our expectations.

We filed our complaint because Apple's actions were damaging competition and consumers and clearly contravening the law. This is evident from Apple's belief that Spotify users on the IOS are Apple customers and not Spotify customers, which underlies Apple's problem. We respect the process that the European Commission must now undertake to carry out its review.
