SSDI, SSI, incentive checks: details about the second payment, catch-up and more

If you receive supplemental income or disability insurance, chances are you are eligible to be paid in the just approved second round of incentive payments, which the IRS just got began to broadcast.

Currently the checks are maximum $ 600 per adult and per eligible child, and for as long as there is still a phone call from some lawmakers to increase the maximum payment to $ 2,000, the bill passed by Congress and that President Donald Trump signed into law on Sunday should be adapted for this. A third incentive payment in 2021 is more likely.

SSDI, SSI recipients should be given a second stimulus check

The question of who are eligible for a second incentive payment has largely remained the same as the first round in March with the CARES law. That means if you are part of the SSI or SSDI program, you are eligible for a check just like in the first round, as long as you have a Social Security number and you are not claimed as a dependent on someone else’s tax return. The family income also cannot exceed the threshold (that’s $ 75,000 single, $ 112,500 householder, and $ 150,000 married).

What do you need to do to receive the second payment?

According to the IRS, those who receive Social Security pension, SSDI, railroad retirement benefits, and supplemental security income, as well as veteran cases beneficiaries, are automatically eligible for a payment. The IRS said payments will begin this week and continue through mid-January.

Is it too late if you missed the deadline for submitting a claim for the first stimulus check?

If you’re receiving SSI or SSDI but still haven’t gotten a stimulus check from round one, the IRS may need even more information about your eligibility. To receive your money this year, the IRS has set a deadline of Nov. 21 at provide your information. If you missed that date, you can claim the extra amount when you file a return for 2020 in 2021. This is called the Recovery Rebate Credit.

The IRS said it will provide more details on what action to take as we approach the filing deadline in 2021.

What if you did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019?

If you receive federal benefits, including SSI and SSDI, as your only form of income, you were not required to file a federal income tax return in 2018 or 2019. Under the CARES law, you were still eligible for an incentive check, and should have received one automatically (there’s no need to file a simple tax return, as the IRS originally said).

How exactly does the incentive money get to you?

Most SSI and SSDI recipients have not received their first payments through their Direct Express card, although this is usually what the government uses to distribute federal benefits. Instead, the payment came in through a non-Direct Express bank account or as a paper check if you hadn’t registered your bank account information with the IRS.

This time, the IRS says on its website that SSI and SSDI recipients should expect to receive their incentive check money the same way they receive their federal benefits, possibly fasteras the IRS has already set up the payment system.

How to find out if your children are eligible for the second stimulus check

Under the CARES Act, qualified people with dependents aged 16 or younger were eligible for up to $ 500 per dependent child. But not everyone with eligible dependents actually receive that extra money. The last day to claim your missing payment and receive it this year was November 21st. The IRS said if you missed the deadline, you can claim the missing payment when you file tax returns in 2021.

When could you get your missing incentive money?

If your first payment has not yet come in and you registered with the Non-Filers tool by November 21, the IRS says you will receive the payment by the end of 2020. If you missed the Nov. 21 closing, the IRS said you can receive your payment in 2021 when you file your federal tax return.

To track the status of your payment, use the IRS Get My Payment tool, which the IRS said will restart later this week with information on the second check and the first.

When do you get the catch-up fee for dependent persons?

If you used the IRS’s Non-Filers tool from May 5 to August 15, the IRS should have automatically issued the catch-up payment for your family members by October. If you have your original incentive money by direct deposit, you should have received the catch-up payment in the same way. Others should have received it by mail.

If you applied for your missing dependent money before November 21, the payment should arrive by the end of 2020, the same way you received your first payment (likely direct deposit or mail). If you missed the deadline, your check will be included on your 2020 tax return in 2021.

Use the IRS ‘Get My Payment’ tool to check the status of your payment or that of your dependent. You should also receive a message in the mail to let you know that an additional $ 500 has been spent per eligible child.

What Incentive Payments Mean for SSI and SSDI Recipients Residing Outside the US

If you are a Social Security beneficiary with a foreign address whose monthly benefit is deposited into a foreign bank account, you will receive your incentive payment as a check in the mail (the IRS does not deposit money into foreign banks). The IRS planned to send those checks in late July. If you live abroad but receive your monthly benefit through a US bank, you must also have received your payment by the end of July by direct deposit into that account.
