SSI and SSDI recipients: important details about incentive payments, the first and possible second check

If you do participate in the SSI or SSDI programs and have not received it the first incentive payment, you have to file a claim for yourself or your dependent children the following week, at 12 p.m. PT (3 p.m. ET) on Nov. 21. Below we will walk you through details pertaining to SSI and SSDI receivers. (Here are some of the groups of people who are likely is not eligible for a second stimulus check.) If you receive SSDI or SSI, you may be eligible for a second incentive payment

Until Congress finalizes a bill, we don’t know exactly who qualify for a second incentive payment. But based on the proposed bills we’ve seen so farwe expect qualifications to remain largely the same as in March’s CARES Act. That means if you participate in the SSI or SSDI program, you are eligible for a check, as you did in the first round, as long as you have a Social Security number and you are not claimed as dependent on someone else’s tax return. Your family income also can’t exceed the threshold (that’s $ 75,000 single, $ 112,500 householder, and $ 150,000 married).

Here are two reasons why a stimulus control can be legally removed.

What to know if you haven’t filed a 2018 or 2019 federal tax return

If you receive federal benefits, including SSI and SSDI as your only form of income, you were not required to file a federal income tax return in 2018 or 2019. Under CARES law, you were still eligible for a stimulus check and had you automatically received one (no need to file a simple tax return, as the IRS originally said).

How you’re likely to receive your check: Payment by mail or direct express

Most SSI and SSDI recipients did not receive their first payments through their Direct Express card, although this is usually what the government uses to distribute federal benefits. Instead, the payment came in through a non-Direct Express bank account or as a paper check if you hadn’t registered your bank account information with the IRS. It is likely that if a second check is approved, it will arrive the same way as the first, but possibly fastersince the IRS has already set up the payment system.

What to Know If Your First Check Never Arrived

If you’re on SSI or SSDI but still haven’t gotten a stimulus check from round one, the IRS may need even more information about your eligibility. To get your money, you must provide your information to the IRS using the tool Non-Filers by November 21st at 12 p.m. PT (3 p.m. ET).

The agency will ask for your name, mailing address, date of birth, Society Security number, bank account number if you have one, identity protection personal identification number, also known as IP PIN and driver’s license or state issued ID, if you have one. You can submit this information online using the Non-Filers tool. (Important caveatIf you’ve filed a tax refund for 2019, don’t use this tool, even if you weren’t required to – it will only slow down the processing of your return and any refund.)

Read this if your dependent was not covered on your first check

Under the CARES Act, qualified people with dependents age 16 or younger were eligible for up to $ 500 per dependent. But not everyone with eligible dependents actually received that extra money. The last day to claim your missing payment and receive it this year was extended until November 21 at noon PT (9 p.m. ET).

How to Use the IRS Tool to Claim Missing Stimulus Control

Here’s what to expect when using the IRS Non-Filers tool: Create an account with your email address and phone number, along with a user ID and password. You will be taken to a screen where you enter your application status (single or married joint declaration) and personal details. There is a box to check if someone else can claim you or your spouse as a dependent. Then you can enter your bank information (if you’d rather not have or have a bank, the IRS will send you a check in the mail). You will be taken to another screen to enter more personal information to verify your identity.

After completing the forms, you will receive an email from Free File Fillable Forms customer service confirming that you have successfully submitted your information, or that you know there is a problem and how to correct it. The site uses your information to automatically fill out a Form 1040 and send it to the IRS to calculate and send you a payment.

How soon your missing stimulus control could come

If your payment didn’t come in on the first round, but you register with the Non-Filers tool by Nov. 21 at 12 p.m. PT (9 p.m. ET), the IRS says you’ll receive the payment by the end of 2020.

Use the IRS Get My Payment tool to track the status of your payment.

When you can get the missing money for my family members

If you used the Non-Filers tool from May 5 through August 15, the IRS should have automatically issued the catch-up fee for your family members in October. If you have your original incentive money by direct deposit, you should have received the catch-up payment in the same way. Others should have received it by mail.

If you apply for your missing dependent money before November 21, the payment should arrive by the end of 2020, in the same way you received your first payment (likely direct deposit or mail). If you miss the deadline, your check will be included on your 2020 tax return in 2021.

To check the status of your or your dependent payment, use the IRS Get My Payment tool to track it. You should also receive notice in the mail to let you know that an additional $ 500 has been spent per eligible child.

What to know if you live outside the US and receive SSI or SSDI

If you are a Social Security beneficiary with a foreign address whose monthly benefit is deposited into a foreign bank account, you will receive your incentive payment as a check in the mail (the IRS does not deposit money into foreign banks). The IRS planned to send those checks in late July. If you live abroad but receive your monthly benefit through a US bank, you must also have received your payment by the end of July by direct deposit into that account. Look for more information if you qualify for a second stimulus check and when you could expect a second stimulus check.
