And this year, the money from your stimulus check can be tied filling out your tax forms. Why? Because Congress and the IRS have linked the first two direct payments to your taxes, and your filing status can be important to a third stimulus check — even if you are a non-finder. For example, if you know how the IRS calculates the amount you owe can tell you whether to expect a full or partial check – or not at all.

The IRS also uses this year’s return (before taxes on your 2020 income) to make amends missing stimulus check money.
