heather

Cult classic heather is one of the best comedies on Amazon Prime. This dark satire takes on the teen movies of its time (the 1980s) and adds a violent edge to the story of a sincere young woman who falls in love with a rebellious naughty boy. Veronica (Winona Ryder) and JD (Christian Slater) take their crusade against the vapid popular students in their high school to deadly extremes, while the film retains a sense of the absurd. The filmmakers mix rousing dialogue with sharp commentary on conformity.

His Girl Friday

Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell star as bickering journalists (and ex-husbands) in Howard Hawks’ classic comedy His Girl Friday. Hawks swaps the sex of one of the main characters of the popular play The front page, making the story both a remarriage comedy and a farce. The lightning-fast dialogue is full of clever fabrications and puns, with Grant and Russell constantly pitting each other as their characters pursue (and fall in love again) the greatest story of their careers.

start

Christopher Nolan’s obsession with intricate plot twists meets the perfect high concept in start. This thriller involves a ‘raid’ of ideas, literally in the world of dreams, as trained agents infiltrate the subconscious of a business leader.

The twisting plot is matched by Nolan’s expansive, mind-blowing imagery, which he deploys in some truly amazing action sequences. Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard and Tom Hardy lead a strong cast that brings some emotional depth to Nolan’s intoxicating concepts.

The film has a bittersweet, melancholy tone, with Llewyn serving as a stand-in for anyone facing the prospect of giving up on their dreams.

Love & Friendship

One of Amazon’s best original movies, Love & Friendship is a delightful Jane Austen adaptation by filmmaker Whit Stillman. Based on Austen’s early novel Lady Susan, the film stars Kate Beckinsale as a ruthless, sharp-tongued social climber with witty backlash to everyone she meets. Love & Friendship adds a grisly edge to Austen’s quintessential romantic tale, while still satisfying all the main characters in suitable marriages.

Night of the Living Dead
