The best places to buy prescription glasses online for 2020

If you don't buy your prescription glasses sunglasses and contact lenses online, you can easily lose hundreds of dollars in savings. In addition to being cheaper, buying prescription glasses online from a manufacturer such as Warby Parker or one of many colleagues in the eyewear industry is also much easier than to go somewhere personally.

If you're looking for some new ones, we've put together the seven best online prescription eyewear suppliers we've found to help you narrow down your options. Please note that all of these services have been personally used by me or one of the CNET staff, and we will update this as we try more. But before we dive in, keep in mind the following requirements, caveats, and tips:

  • You must know your prescription and pupil distance from your optometrist before using an online eyewear store ̵
1; so get yourself a paper copy next time that you have your eyesight checked by an ophthalmologist. Once you have that, most of these sites allow you to upload a photo of the recipe from your phone when you first buy.
  • Most of the sites highlighted here offer some sort of discount for new customers. That means that the first time you buy glasses can be when you get the best deal, so it can pay to try different online retailers before buying glasses online.
  • See how to buy glasses online and save hundreds of dollars for more tips.
  • Some sites are delayed in transmission due to the coronavirus .

Several CNET editors have bought their glasses on Warby Parker, which has a good selection of sharp-looking frames. While glasses start from as little as $ 95 with a single vision prescription, chances are you will pay a little more – about $ 150- $ 200, according to my colleagues – based on the type of frame you choose, your prescription and lens type (sunglasses and non-prescription glasses start at $ 175, and progressive lenses in both glasses and sunglasses start at $ 295). But the finished products are usually a step up from what more budget-oriented sites offer.

Notable Site Features : With the company's app for iPhone X or later iPhone models – sorry, there is no Android version yet – you can search the site by frame size and try different frames virtually (it works) surprisingly good) and better yet, you can try up to five frames for free at home for five days. Once your five days are up, place your box in the mail with the prepaid return label. Hopefully, you'll find at least one style you like among the five you've chosen for the home trial.

Warby also has physical optical stores in some locations around the country if you want to go in and try frames that way (unfortunately, they were closed during the coronavirus epidemic). Some of these locations also offer eye tests – and that recipe can be used in Warby or elsewhere.

The online glasses store also has a "buy a pair, give a pair" program, so for every pair of glasses you buy, the company distributes a pair to someone in need, either for free or for "extremely affordable" prices & # 39 ;. (See details.)

Current Deals and Discount Coupons : Nothing remarkable.

Shipping times: According to Warby: "It takes seven to 10 business days for one pair of glasses to reach you, from the moment we get all your order information. Sunglasses and sunglasses take 10 to 12 business days to reach you. (These estimates reflect the experience of CNET editors who have used the service.)

Roka, based in Austin, Texas, has only recently branched into the online prescription eyewear industry. The retailer's marketing slogan is "The most technically advanced glasses that don't look technical", and the glasses look impressively light, durable and stylish. Like Warby Parker, these are at the top end of the online spectrum of prescription glasses, with prices around $ 200 for completed prescription glasses depending on some of the lens upgrades you could add. But Roka has some of the best frames out there.

Roka started making athletic goggles for runners, bikers and triathletes, and many of the prescription frames are bendable at the ends and have rubber tracks to help you get a better fit. The frames also come with three sizes of grip nose pads for a better fit. They are among the most comfortable glasses I've worn – and they really stay on your face. I personally like the small Oslo frame in clear.

Striking Site Features : Like Warby, there is a home trial program. You can try up to four frames at home for up to seven days. The box comes with a prepaid return label – you simply hand it in to a post office to return it.

Current Deals and Coupons : 25% off sitewide code MOVE25 through April 13.

Shipping Times: Roka does not provide general estimates and instead gives you an estimated shipping time when individual orders are placed based on the shipping option you choose (next day, second day or by land).

GlassesUSA.com, founded in Israel 10 years ago, offers more affordable options for buying prescription glasses online than sites like Warby Parker and Roka, with prescription glasses starting at $ 38. But it also includes several high quality premium brands, including Ray-Ban and Persol. The designer eyewear lists for more – frames start at $ 89 for standard finished Rx glasses – but discounts can lower them in price.

The one-stop shop offers a 65% discount on your first frames, as well as discounts on lens upgrades (for example, photochromic), contact lenses, and reading glasses. It also recently launched a landing page for flash sales on prescription sunglasses. And around holidays, you can look for seasonal promotions for men's glasses, women's glasses and contact lenses.

Striking Site Features : With a virtual "mirror" feature, you can upload your photo to the site and see what a pair of glasses look like on your face shape to help you find the perfect pair of frames. And the company is increasing the try-at-home ante. Instead of just sending you the frames, GlassesUSA will send you the frame with your actual prescription in it, so you can really try it out for up to 14 days – although the feature is limited to certain frames and lens options. The site also offers a 100% money back guarantee so you can return your glasses if you don't like what you end up getting. And while we've seen a few negative online reviews for GlassesUSA.com, the company seems to follow and respond diligently.

Current Deals and Coupons : 30% off Ray-Ban and Oakley frames with code OKRAY30 or 70% off all lens upgrades with code LENS70 .

Shipping Times: Expect seven to ten days between ordering and arrival of GlassesUSA.com products, depending on the type of glasses and the shipping option you choose.

What do you do if you already have a pair of glasses that you like, but your prescription is old (or the lenses on your frame are scratched) and you just want to replace the lenses? Lensabl is one of the few sites that allows you to submit your own pair of frames and get a new prescription lens. The motto is "Your frames, our lenses", with prices starting at $ 77 for buying a basic pair of single lenses. A pair of tinted sunglasses lenses start at $ 97.

You upload your prescription online, choose the type of lens you want, and Lensabl then sends you a box with a prepaid return label. You just mail them your glasses in the box (shipping is free). New customers receive a 15% discount. This site is also a good option if you have old glasses that you want to convert into prescription sunglasses.

Recently, Lensabl has also started offering full frame eyeglasses packages starting at $ 77 for a single vision Rx and $ 177 for progressive.

Striking Site Features : For $ 40, you can renew your recipe online. Not everyone is eligible to take the online eye exam – you have to answer a number of questions to see if you are eligible – but when you do, Lensabl says, "All you need is your computer, smartphone and about 15 minutes. " Your results will be reviewed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist licensed in your country, who will then give you a new prescription via email.

Current deals and coupons : 25% discount on everyday lenses and spectacle frames with code SEE25 .

Shipping Times: Lensabl promises a lead time of approximately two weeks from when you send your frames to when you receive them back.

Zenni has been around for a while and it is the first site I used to buy glasses online. It's more of a budget-oriented site, and over the years I got some nice deals on cheap glasses, especially when Zenni occasionally ran a three-for-two glasses sale. I had both standard and prescription glasses made here, and so is fellow editor David Katzmaier, who has since graduated from Warby Parker (however, said he would still buy prescription sunglasses from Zenni because they are cheap and decent enough his)

Over the past few years, Zenni has subtly changed his image, bringing in celebrities like Rashida Jones and 49ers tight George Kittle to give the brand a bit more of a hipper vibe. The lenses are good and these guys offer nice deals on upgrades to photochromic lenses.

Standout Site Features : There's a Frame Fit "mirror" feature that lets you upload a photo and see the frames on your face, as well as a new "virtual" test feature (powered by Ditto) that lets you see the glasses on your face while moving with your computer's webcam or your phone's camera. This is similar to the virtual try-on feature that Warby Parker offers.

Current Deals and Coupons : Nothing remarkable.

Shipping times: "Your glasses will be delivered approximately two weeks after receipt of your order," says Zenni. In my experience, that sometimes extends to almost three weeks.

As you'd expect, SportRx is suitable for those looking for sports eyewear, with a wide range of options from major brands such as Smith, Oakley, Ray-Ban, Costa and Nike . Not all frames it sells have an Rx option, but most do.

Although you get a better deal here than at your local sunglass boutique, this is not a budget site and you can end up paying from $ 250 or more depending on your prescription. But SportRx has a number of deals on frames and also gives you access to a true optician to help you decide which glasses are right for your prescription and athletic pursuits. Making Rx lenses for sports glasses can be tricky!

Notable Site Features : SportRx says that instead of talking (or chatting live) with an average customer service representative hidden in an obscure call center, you speak to a "friendly SportRx Optician in sunny San Diego" who is rigorous training regime (the SportRx Academy) and is well versed in various aspects of optics: refractive light, myopia, presbyopia, astigmatism and everything else you can think of. & # 39; Moreover, & # 39 ;, the site says, & # 39; they have extensive training on the best sports frame and lens options in the world. & # 39;

Current Deals and Coupons : 30% off Ray-Ban, Costa and Oakley frames with codes RAYBAN30 COSTA30 and OAKLEY30 . Birthday sale ends April 21: $ 50 off on orders of $ 250 plus with code BIRTHDAY 50 $ 75 off on orders of $ 375 plus with code BIRTHDAY 75 and $ 100 off on orders of $ 500 plus with code BIRTHDAY100 .

Shipping times: About 14 days.

Coastal has some similarities with online store Zenni in that it leads with low prices and sporadic two-for-one deals around different holidays. It recently added a virtually fitting feature and there is an option to enter the size of your current frames and the site will offer options based on those measurements that fit your face well.

Coastal does offer some premium brand frames (Ray-Ban, Oakley and others), but that will cost your price up to over $ 100 with lenses.

Striking Site Features : Coastal has a philanthropic partnership with the Essilor Vision Foundation to improve the sight of people who cannot afford glasses. Coastal says that "for every pair of glasses we buy, we will donate glasses to someone in need."

Like Zenni, Warby Parker and others, it now has a virtual trial function.

Current Deals and Coupons : 25% off all lens upgrades, including Bluereflect, with code SCREENTIME . Buy one frame, get one for free – note that some frames are excluded – with code BOGO .

Shipping Times: Expect 10 to 14 days.
