The easiest way to blur faces in videos on your Android phone «Android :: Gadget Hacks

Video editing is no small task. Computationally, it requires quite a bit of processing power, perhaps more than any other task you want to do on your phone. But with the right software, it doesn’t have to be that bad to blur people’s faces in your videos.

The best way to make faces unidentifiable is to pixelate them with a mosaic effect. Traditionally, this is done with powerful desktop software such as Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere, as you have to apply the mosaic and let it follow the person. “Tracking,” as it is called, is usually a big deal with mobile video editing, but not with a new app that does all of this automatically.

Step 1
: Install PutMask

The app that makes it incredibly easy to pixelate faces is called PutMask and it’s available for free on the Google Play Store. So search it by name in your Play Store app to install it, or go to the installation page at the link below.

Step 2: Choose a video to edit

When you first launch the app, you will need to tap “Allow” when prompted to allow PutMask to access media on your device.

From the main menu, tap Pixelate Your Video, then select a locally saved video on your phone. Then you will have the chance to trim the video clip if you want. Otherwise, or when you’re done, tap “Continue” to import the video.

Step 3: Identify Faces

Now comes the software magic: PutMask can automatically recognize and track faces in your videos. One thing to be aware of, however, is that the automatic recognition only takes place for the frame of the video you start with.

In other words, move the playback cursor to a point in the video where the faces you want to blur are displayed. From there, tap on ‘Detect Faces’ and let the app process the video. But know that if new faces come into view after this point in the video, they will not be detected by this first pass. So you need to move the playback cursor to a point in the video where other faces appear that you want to blur, then click “Detect Faces” again.

Step 4: Blur faces

After face recognition is complete, you will see numbered boxes across all faces in the frame. Tap the faces you want to pixelate and the boxes will be filled with a black and green grid. If you have faces do not want to pixelate, leave them unchecked.

Now select it Export tab just below the video (to the right of the Edit tab), then press the “Export” button in the lower left corner of the screen. When it’s done processing, you’ll be presented with your pixelated video!

Note that there is a watermark on videos processed with PutMask. If you want to remove this, you can tap the “PutMask Watermark” button while exporting the video and then follow the instructions to buy the pro version of the app for $ 4.99.
