Visit Snopes.com – the huge website for checking facts and unmasking ̵

1; today and you'll Many find current issues that relate to the present time, such as fact-finding checks on political statements, information on alternative medicine, and in-depth reflections on topics that have been directly ripped from the headlines.

When Snopes started in 1995, however, they had a fruitful backlog – actually the whole history – to dig into. Of all the topics they would eventually address, such as whether or not the moon landing was faked or whether Napoleon was actually super short, they started with a persistent strange rumor: that Charles Manson, the notorious criminal and cult leader, had auditioned for The Monkees .

The claim is incorrect, but not entirely without merit. Unlike many rumors and claims that even the most remote base in reality lacks, the Manson-Monkees link has at least a ghost of plausibility. Although Manson never attended that audition, he hung around with people in the music scene in California, did auditions for the Byrds, and one of his musical compositions even ended up as a Beach Boys b-side one.
