The humble Twinkie has been filling a vanilla cream for most of his life as a snack food with very questionable nutritional value, but that was not always the case.
The Twinkie was invented in 1
930 when James Alexander Dewar was looking for a way to better utilize the machines for making strawberry-filled shortcakes with strawberries when the strawberries were out of season. The original Twinkies were filled with banana cream, but when bananas were rationed during the Second World War, they switched to vanilla cream. The popularity of the new filling meant that the old recipe was suspended decades after the war, here and there rarely came out as a promotional tool.
In 2005, however, a promotional link with the film King Kong proved that consumers still feel like filling banana cream and in 2007 Hostess brought the filling to retirement and back into distribution.
