Looking back at the music I have listened to last year, it always provides me with insight and evokes memories, good and bad. I like to think of it as a musical album from a year ago. But as a subscriber toI had to rely on third-party apps to give me an annual overview of the replay of the songs I listened to the most.
Not this year. Apple Music now has Replay playlists that make you feel as you walk through them. The playlist is not created automatically, but it only takes a few seconds for you to submit a request and add it to youraccount.
I listen to music all day long and there are days when I get stuck in a source of repetition from the same album or artist. Having a playlist with the top 1
How to obtain your Replay playlists
The fastest way to get your Replay playlist is to visit the dedicated Apple web page. You can visit it from any device, it doesn't have to be your iPhone, iPad or Macbook. You can also open the Music app on your Apple device, browse to Browse and tap the Replay tile.
Click or tap Download your Replay mix and log in with your Apple ID. A few seconds later, the website will display your 2019 Replay playlist. Scroll through it to see the top 100 songs you have listened to this year, complete with the number of times played during that time.
Apple will also record other statistics, such as the total number of hours you have listened to music, the number of artists (complete with your top 5) and the number of different albums (again, with a top 10 list).
But this is where the magic really happens
When you scroll to the end of your Replay list, you will find that Apple Music has also created Replay playlists for each year that you are an Apple Music subscriber.
Tap the Add button next to each playlist that you want to add to your Apple Music account.
That means to me that I now have playlists for 2015 to 2019 of the top music that I have listened to that year. It was crazy to go back and see how much (or how little) I listened to most has changed.
The Post Traumatic album by Mike Shinoda is a staple of 2018 and 2019, for me (and rightly so). In 2015, when I first registered for Apple Music and my children were much younger, I listened more to the soundtrack of The Descendants than I want to admit. I had completely forgotten that movie until I saw the soundtrack in my playlist.
Last year, Spotify did something similar for its users, and one should think they will do it again as we get closer to the end of the year.
