Okay, this is a weird one. Pixar’s Ratatouille is about to make its Broadway debut thanks to a TikTok meme. Presented on New Years Day by Broadway̵
TikTocker Em Jaccs (@e_jaccs) pre-planted the seed Ratatouille: A Musical TikTok with a short video and a song with the title Ode to Remy. The song, which lingers in my head, was then discovered by composer and arranger Daniel Mertzlufft, who carried a Disney-esque orchestral accompaniment to prove that a Ratatouille musical might work. The meme continued to snowball as theater kids and music geeks pumped new songs into the rat-colored miasma, often while wearing costumes and performing dramatic pieces.
TikTok says more than 200 million users have engaged with the original Ode to Remy, often parody or contribute to the video using TikTok’s Duet feature. And as traditional theaters are closing, the TikTok is based Ratatouille is technically the most popular musical of 2020. It’s a good idea to make the meme a full production, although it’s surprising to see Disney sign a fan-made musical for one of its most beloved characters.
It is not clear who will play the lead Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical, but producers promise the cast will include Broadway actors and TikTok creatives. TikTok personalities also work behind the scenes to design the set, playlist and other assets.
Tickets for Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical start at $ 5 and are available from TodayTix. The show will premiere on New Years Day at 7 p.m. EST, although you can purchase and watch it on demand anytime thereafter.
