Answer: Salmon P. Chase

The very first dollar bill issued in the United States hit the printing presses in 1

862 and had a face that few would recognize today. The portrait on the first dollar bill was not of a former president, war hero or early American celebrity whose face and name remain in popular imagination even today.

Instead, perhaps more practically, the portrait that appeared on the first dollar bill was simply a portrait of the then-sitting US finance minister, Salmon P. Chase. He remained on the dollar bill until 1869 when the dollar bill was revised and the portrait was replaced by one of the first American president, George Washington.

However, the implementation of salmon as a portrait model for currency was not over, as it later appeared on the 10,000-dollar bill, a certificate with a high face value used to trade currencies between banks.
