Although the three controls with three tabs are fairly intuitive, there is still a learning curve. By removing the buttons, you apparently lose the ability to jump between apps with the quick-change gesture. I say apparently because there is still a way, it's just not very obvious.
To try it, just swipe up twice from where your recent apps button is located (remember, you can change the position to either right or left of the bottom edge). It doesn't have to be fast, it works even better if you take the time. This will take you directly back to the last app that you had opened in the same way by double-clicking the multitasking button.
