What the Echo's light ring means

Alexa is usually completely inactive until it is invoked with the wake word (Alexa, Echo, Amazon, Computer). But sometimes the LED ring around the top of the Echo and Echo Dot or a light bar on your Echo Show will light up even when you are not actively using the smart speaker.

Alexa cannot find your smart home devices

Amazon Echos supports a long list of smart home devices. The growing list includes devices such as the Ecobee3 and lines from companies such as Honeywell, Insteon, Lifx, Nest, Philips Hue and Wink. Even more devices and services have added official Alexa support through Skills that make that service or device record your verbal commands (eg "Alexa, tell Philips Hue to turn on the kitchen light").

To add a new device, open the Alexa app and tap Devices > Add device > select the device you want to add (such as a smart switch or plug) and follow the instructions in the app.

Even if the devices are not supported as standard and have no skills, you are not completely out of luck. Alexa has an official IFTTT channel and can also integrate with Yonomi, both of which have a comprehensive list of supported smart home devices.

If you've already added your devices but Alexa can't connect to them, there are a number of solutions. Check the command you are using, also known as your call. The assignments vary between different devices, skills and connected services, such as IFTTT. It can be strangely specific commands, and minor differences in the wording or names of the devices can loop Alexa.

Some smart home devices have trouble staying connected due to software issues, congested networks, always on or other issues. Turning off and then on the connected devices will usually resolve connection issues.

If that does not solve the problem, try restarting the speaker by unplugging the power cord and removing and re-adding the device that is working.

Alexa disconnects from Wi-Fi

If your Echo speaker doesn't stay connected to your network constantly enough, there are a few ways to fix connection problems .

First turn everything off and then on again – the router, modem and Alexa speaker. After that, try streaming audio for a few minutes to see if the problem recurs. In this case, try moving the speaker away from other devices, preferably closer to the router, and try switching the speaker to a 5 GHz channel to reduce interference.

Alexa doesn't understand what you said

"I'm sorry, I didn't quite understand that" – is a phrase often spoken by Alexa. It happens when the voice assistant did not understand what you said . Alarms and Notifications Are Too Loud

You may have noticed that when timers or alarms go off, the sound is much louder (or perhaps quieter) than Alexa's playback volume. That's because the alarm and timer volume is controlled separately in the Alexa app.

To set the alarm, timer and notification volume, open the Alexa app on Android or iOS and go to Devices > [your device name]> Sounds and drag the slider to the desired volume level.

Releases streaming music with Spotify

Amazon's Alexa speakers can stream music from third-party services such as Spotify, iHeartRadio, TuneIn and Pandora. Of those, Spotify seems to have more hiccups than the other services, with music randomly stopping midway for no reason and sometimes not playing at all.

There is no definitive solution to the errors, but a good start to solve the problem is to restart the speaker. Then disconnect your Spotify account and sign in again.

To unlink Spotify, open the Amazon Alexa app and go to Settings > Music > Spotify . Tap Disable Skill and confirm by tapping Disable . Then tap Enable to use and follow the instructions to login to your account again.

Another answer to the problem may be with your Spotify account. Unlike Google Home ($ 49 at Walmart) that allows to stream Spotify free users Alexa still needs Spotify Premium accounts for streaming.

Problems Playing Music on the Correct Speaker
