We’re not sure when the IRS will update its tracking tool called Get My Payment, but it will likely happen shortly after the agency starts sending out the third round of incentive checks.

We expect the information to be updated once a day, as with the first two payments. Once the tracking app is live for the third check, enter your social security number, date of birth, street address and zip code, and the tool will display a message with information about your check – whether the payment has been sent, the payment method (direct deposit or by post) and the date of issue. It also lets you know if the service is not yet able to determine your status – more on error messages below.

What does the message ‘Need more information’ mean?

Based on the first two checks, you may see an error if the tool cannot determine this your suitability — or if you are not eligible at all, if your payment status is not available, or if many people try to open the tool at once (expect that in the first few days).

If the Get My Payment tool gives you a payment date, but you still haven’t received your money, the IRS may need more details from you. The error could also indicate that your check was returned because the the post office could not deliver it

After the IRS starts sending checks, the online tool allows you to enter your bank information to receive your payment straight to your bank account, like it did with the first payment, or it can hold your payment until this one receives a current postal address

What to do if you see the message ‘Payment status not available’

It’s normal for the Get My Payment tool to give you a message that says “Payment status not available” until the payment is scheduled to be made, according to the IRS. So you don’t have to do anything.

You may still be able to prepare for a third stimulus check

Which the IRS is about to send the third stimulus check, you’ll probably get it fastest if you get a direct deposit setting up an account. If you don’t, it may not be too late, but you should act quickly. The IRS did not allow people to register new direct deposit accounts or change their bank details for the second stimulus check and we cannot know at this point whether the agency would allow direct deposit adjustments for the third incentive payment

What we do know is that you can register for a new direct deposit account (actually up to three) as part of filing your 2020 tax return. If the IRS receives your bank information before it processes your third party payment, it will likely use that information to transfer your money.

You can track your emailed stimulus check to your mailbox

If your third stimulus check goes out in the mail, the US Postal Service has a free app that can let you know when it’s about to deliver your stimulus money from the IRS. Called Informed Delivery, the email tracking service automatically scans your letters and can notify you when they will be delivered. What if you still owe money from the first and / or second payment?

The IRS no longer automatically sends the first and second payments.
