Turn off read receipts in Microsoft Teams

Logo of Microsoft Teams

Some people like reading receipts. Some people hate read receipts. If you fall into the latter camp and you use Microsoft Teams, you’ll be happy to know that you can turn off read receipts for direct messages.

Microsoft Teams users can disable read receipts by default, but your administrators can change this to enforce read receipts. If so, you can̵

If you’ve opened chats in separate windows, you will need to close and reopen them for this to take effect in those chats. But otherwise this works immediately.

How to Avoid Sending Read Receipts

If your administrators have enforced read receipts to be enabled for everyone, you cannot disable this setting. However, read receipts are only triggered when you open a chat, so as long as you don’t open the chat, no read receipt will be sent.

This means you can be a bit sneaky by changing your notification settings to make sure chat replies show up in the banner. The banner is the pop-up preview of new messages in the lower right corner of Microsoft Teams. That way you can read messages sent to you without activating a read receipt.

To do this, click on your profile picture in the top right corner of the window and select ‘Settings’.

The

Open the “Notifications” tab and then click the “Edit” button next to the “Chat” option.

The

The Chat Notification Options.

In this way, you can see chat messages in popup notifications without activating the read receipt. You can even reply from the notification preview without activating the read receipt, but once you reply, it will be clear that you have read the message anyway.
