United’s electric short-haul jets will take off (vertically) in 2024 – Review Geek

Short-haul aviation flights are appalling in terms of both cost and environmental impact. United Airlines is looking for an alternative: small, low-passenger flights powered by next-generation electric planes that can take off and land like helicopters. A huge order for new aircraft from a start-up company will test the idea.

The American airline megacorp has placed an astonishing $ 1

billion order for a new generation of small electric-powered aircraft that can take off and land vertically, like a helicopter. The “eVTOL” vessel from start-up Archer Aviation. That will deliver 200 of the small designs to United and its regional partner Mesa Airlines, with an option to extend the deal for $ 500 million more (an additional 50 aircraft likely).

United hopes to use the Archer planes for an eco-friendly California shuttle within three years. According to the company’s promotional material, the Archer electric propeller plane can carry four passengers “up to 60 miles” at a speed of 240 miles per hour. So this shuttle wouldn’t be able to go from Los Angeles to San Francisco, but it could get you from one side of LA to the other in the space of one Futurama delivery. And since it can take off and land like a helicopter, you don’t need a commercial airport with a half-mile runway at either end of the trip.

United has said nothing of its plans for the price of these low-haul, low-passenger routes. Suppose it is more than you can afford if you don’t already have your own plane.
