Blue light from any device can interrupt your circadian rhythm, which according to research can lead to all kinds of fatigue problems. One of the best ways to work around this is to use a blue light filter to change the color palette of your screen. Some of the best monitors have their own blue light filters built in, but there are also numerous software solutions.
If you are looking for a blue light filter for your smartphone, there are lots of great apps that you can download from the Google Play Store or iOS App Store.
What is the problem with blue light?
The reason that blue light hurts is purely biological. Sleep is part of the circadian rhythm, the cycle of biological processes that is partly determined by the amount of light and dark to which our body is exposed. In the most natural environment, an environment where we are only exposed to sunlight, our retina feel when the sun sets and the environment becomes darker. That leads our hypothalamus to tell the body to produce melatonin and other sleep hormones and lower our body temperature.
However, when we use artificial light to extend our day, our bodies get confused and the various sleep signals are disturbed. Even worse is the blue light emitted by fluorescent lamps and LED lamps – such as those on our various device screens – and which makes us even more alert and produce even less melatonin.
Microsoft has added a blue light-limiting feature to Windows 10 in the Creators Update that was released in April 2017. This feature becomes & # 39; Nightlight & # 39; and shifts the Windows 10 display to show warmer colors that reduce the amount of blue light being emitted.
Turning on the night light function is a simple enough process.
Step 1: Open the settings menu by searching for it in the Windows 10 search box or press the Windows key and X and then click Settings .
Step 2: Select System from the menu.
Step 3: S elect Display in the menu on the left if this is not yet.
Step 4: Set the Night lamp to On.

When you turn on the function for the first time, you immediately notice the color shift. After a while your eyes will adjust to the change and it should be less intrusive. However, by reducing the amount of blue light, the night light function reduces the effect of using your Windows 10 PC late at night – you can fall asleep more easily and your sleep can be deeper and more restful.
Apple was first introduced in iOS and released Night Shift to Macs in MacOS Sierra in March 2017.
As with Windows 10, the function is simple enough to enable and configure to suit your taste.
Step 1: Open System Preferences .
Step 2: Select Displays, then click on the Night Shift tab.
Like Windows 10 & night light function, Night Shift makes the colors of your display becomes warmer and reduces the amount of blue light being emitted. Give it a try to see if it improves your sleeping habits and makes you healthier, more productive, and generally a happier Mac user.
