The automatic software update setting on your iPhone is nice, but you may not always want to install new iOS versions blindly. New updates can contain bugs and vulnerabilities, and your favorite features may even disappear. If the automatic update option is turned off, you can download and install updates manually, but there are also hidden options to be more specific about how you want to do this.
How manual software updates work normally
If iOS is not set to auto update, go to Settings -> General -> Software Update and select "Download and Install". After entering your passcode to confirm, the firmware will be requested from Apple's servers, then it will be downloaded to your device, will be prepared to update and finally install the new version. Sometimes iOS automatically downloads the latest update but does not install it, in which case you click "Install" instead.
If you are not in the Settings app after starting the "Download and Install" process, and sometimes when iOS downloads the update itself, when the update is ready to install, you will get a popup saying the installation begins. You can click "Install now" to skip the countdown or "Remind me later" to do it whenever you want.
But that's not all you can do. There are two unseen options for preparing iOS software updates on your iPhone; one to download but not install the software update, and one to download and install the software update overnight. These invisible controls first appeared in iOS 13, so if you are using iOS 12.4.1 or lower you will not find them.
Use Force Touch to unlock hidden software update settings
In the "Software Update Settings, if there is a new one you can get, you will see the size of the update, left for more information and the security patches it contains, and the "Download and Install" button. If you don't want to download it and then have it installed automatically or remind you later, long press "Download and Install" with 3D or Haptic Touch Here is an action sheet:
- Download Only : This will download the update and allow you to manually install it whenever you want, but it may occasionally annoy you to install it if it is
- Download and Install Tonight : Instantly downloads the update and automatically installs it overnight, but only if your device is connected to a power source.
& # 39; Download Only & # 39; comes in handy if you don't want your iPhone to reboot while you're using it, and expect to be away from Wi-Fi later when you're finally ready to install it. "Download and Install Tonight" is great for if you're currently on the go but don't want to miss the latest iOS version; you can start it, so it downloads right away but wait until you sleep to install.
