The valve removed more than 100 homage to the alleged white supremacist responsible for mass shooting in a mosque in Christchurch, New Zealand from steam profiles, Kotaku . In the days after the attack, it was found that many users updated their profiles to include the shooter's name or image, and in one case an attack's GIF.
Kotaku says it originally saw 66 profiles that hailed the shooter in the aftermath of the attack, which claimed 49 lives. The number of shelves later exceeded 100. After contacting Valve for comment, the shelves were removed, even though the users continued to promise the shooter. Several organizations have worked to contain the spread of video from the attack. YouTube has been working to resume uploads of the imagery attack, while Reddit banned watchpeopie, a subreddit who presented videos of people who die. Broadcaster Sky New Zealand went as far as removing Sky News Australia from broadcasting in the country after sharing photos of the attack.
