That was two days ago. Since then, Voila AI Artists creations have mushroomed on my Facebook feed and spread on Instagram and WhatsApp (both owned by Facebook). I downloaded it to try it out for myself, drawn to its sophisticated cartoon art and how it managed to capture the character of my friends of all ages. It’s free for iPhone and Android, with a premium ad-free option too (more on that below).
There’s something about avatars that I find irresistible, from the very first Yahoo Messenger avatar I’ve ever used, to Bitmoji and beyond, as if our cartoon selves have the power to capture a core essence as we play a more playful version of stretching ourselves out. Anyway, it took less than five minutes to download Voila AI Artist and create my first cartoon grid. Along the way I also learned a few things. Here’s how to do it and what you need to know.
How to make your Voila AI Artist Cartoon
Step 1: Download Voila AI Artist for iPhone or Android and launch the app. It will ask for permission to use your phone’s camera roll.
Step 2: Choose from the four styles: 3D Cartoon (which I used here), Renaissance, 2D Cartoon and Caricature. Tap the arrow to get started.
Step 3: Your camera roll is now open. Select the photo you want to use or tap Camera or Celebrities at the bottom of the screen to take a new photo or search for celebrities. This generates a grid of four options. In the free version, you can expect one or two ads to interrupt your display. After a few seconds, you can take the ad out of X view and return to your images.
Step 4: You will see four options: the composite grid of your original photo plus your three cartoon views and all three views (Royalty 3D, Baby 3D, and Cartoon 3D). You can take a screenshot here and crop it, or select one of four options, click the Edit button – an up arrow on Android – to instantly share it on Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp, or email it to save or share via other options (when you press . More).
To remove the watermark, speed up the rendering process and remove the ads you see every time you render, you can upgrade to the Voila Pro version for $2 a week, $4 a month or $21 a year – the price at time of writing . There is a three-day free trial with that option.
Which does not draw well with Voila AI Artist
- Non-humans, such as dogs or cats
- Images that the app says faces cannot be detected
- Images of severed heads often work, but with a strange halo the app fills in
