What cheugy means and how to tell if you are a cheug

Get out your vocab flash cards, you have some new internet language to remember. Maybe you started seeing the word “cheugy” bubbling up online and wondering what it means and how to pronounce it. Basically, cheugy is a trendy way of saying something is over, and the word has a moment on TikTok, where people are busy labeling what is cheugy, having existential crises about being cheugy, or just embracing life as a cheug. .

Here’s what you need to know regardless of your cheug status.

So what’s cheugy?

Cheugy means something that is out of fashion. However, if you look up examples of what cheugy is, you will find that people are not talking about thick hair from the 80s or madras shirts from the 60s. Cheugy seems to be mostly linked to millennial fashion, style and more. If you are familiar with the word “base” it is not far from it. Girdle your Pumpkin Spice lattes.

What qualifies as cheugy?

There is no hard and fast rule about what makes something false. If you check out enough TikToks that explain what cheugy is, or check out the Instagram account @CheugLife, you will come across examples that start to form a certain image: the chevron pattern, everything that says “girl boss”, image T-shirts, Ugg boots, being one little too to Disney as an adult. If you’ve ever bought a wood sign from Target that says ‘Collect’, that’s a cheat. If you have merchandise from The Office, Harry Potter, or Star Wars, that’s cheugy too.

Where does the word cheugy come from?

In late March, TikTok user Hallie Cain posted a video explaining that her friends had a word they used for things that were no longer trendy. According to The New York Times, the word was coined by one of Cain’s friends, Gaby Rassan, who coined it in 2013 when she was in high school and tried to come up with a term for people who were just a little different.

“There was a word on the edge of my tongue missing and nothing to describe it and ‘cheugy’ came to me. How it sounded matched the meaning,” Rassan told The New York Times.

Cheugy’s has had an entry in Urban Dictionary since 2018: “The opposite of trendy. Stylish in high school and high school, but no longer in style. Used when someone is still following these outdated trends. This may include but is not limited to, fashion, social media habits, use of jargon, etc. “

On TikTok, however, the word is gaining popularity, with 1.5 million views so far for videos tagged with #cheugy.

Wait, is this sexist?

It’s a good question. Many of the examples you will come across, be it the aforementioned girl boss energy, Ugg boots, or a tank top that says ‘rosé all day’, can feel gendered, like they’re taking a certain swipe at millennial- women. A TikToker, @rod, who creates a lot of content based on being a millennial, shot a video that specifically focused on all the naughty things you might associate more with men, like golf polos, Ax body spray and cargo shorts.

In a piece on cheugy, Rolling Stone argued that bullying is what happens when you “arm someone’s identity markers against them” and that making fun of someone posting Minion memes doesn’t quite meet that standard.

How do you pronounce cheugy?

It sounds like gum tea. In its independent form (a cheug) it sounds like choog.

Are you cheugy?
