Ubisoft’s latest game and newest franchise has finally arrived. Immortals Fenyx Rising (previously “God and Monsters̵

7;) is an interesting game for the studio, with many comparisons drawn both inside and outside Ubisoft’s resume. But what is the game like?

Let’s cover the basics

While Immortals Fenyx Rising is a new IP for Ubisoft, you just need to watch the trailer to understand the comparisons to other games. Especially those from Ubisoft Assassin’s Creed series and Nintendos The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

When Breath of the wilderness was released, it was pretty clear that Nintendo was taking some inspiration from other open-world games, including Ubisoft’s own stable. And in Immortals, you get to see Ubisoft taking that formula back, along with some of Nintendo’s ideas.

There are the more obvious things like the art style, gliding and the ability to climb anywhere, all of which feel good Breath of the Wild-but it goes a little deeper than that. The world design, while visually unique, takes on heavy cues Breath of the wilderness how it places major landmarks on the map. You can jump into enemy encampments and mini boss fights while exploring while exploring, tackle areas in any order you want, and there is a huge number of items and treasures to be found all over the world.

The main difference with Breath of the wilderness from a design perspective is how dense everything is. You will constantly run into new challenges to complete and there is not much empty space to talk about. While that empty space was praised again Breath of the wilderness by many as they make exploration more valuable, if you prefer more condensed worlds then you will likely appreciate the change.

So at that point your gameplay loop gets pretty straightforward: walk the map and find cool stuff while completing random goals or one of the many “Vaults of Tartaros” that are not the shrines of Breath of the wilderness. If you want to see some of these things in action for yourself, then this short gameplay video from GameSpot should be enough to satisfy you without spoiling anything important.

A mythical story

Although it is up for debate whether it is good that immortals takes so much inspiration from other games, the story and setting are certainly positive for the game. The game takes place in a world full of mythical Greek legends. From well-known stories and characters such as Zeus to more obscure choices, the game is teeming with references and reinterpretations of the classic myths. The entire game is all about aligning yourself with four Greek gods to take down the terrifying Titan Typhon.

immortals is largely aimed at a younger audience, so some of the more gruesome stories have … changed, but it keeps its core elements alive. The game even manages to maintain a rather humorous tone with plenty of legitimate good humor, mostly coming from the game’s two storytellers, Zeus and Prometheus, who are constantly bickering with each other. The tone is a nice change from the pace of the rest of the genre, which focuses mainly on realism or dramatic storytelling. If you know a lot about Greek mythology, there is even more here to enjoy.

So, should you get ‘Immortals Fenyx Rising’?

While the gameplay of immortals is very similar to games released before, the game still has enough character to sustain itself. The story and writing are major selling points, with Kotaku reviewer Zack Zwiezen calling it “one of the most entertaining games I’ve played all year”.

On the other side of the coin, while the world is beautiful and detailed, it still exhibits many of the issues Ubisoft’s open world titles face. Enemies and Challenges have fixed difficulty levels, meaning you should try to increase your character’s power level through items and upgrades before making too much progress. As Polygon’s Tyler Colp puts it, “the challenges of immortals‘world does not grow with you. “

If you are not a fan of open world games or have been sick of Ubisoft’s overall world design for years, immortals you are unlikely to change your mind. However, if you like the genre or are a big fan of it Breath of the wilderness and just want something similar before the sequel comes out immortals Phenyx is rising is sure to please you with its detailed world, fun story and involved battles. You can even play the Google Stadia demo for free if you want to try it out before paying. Since Stadia is a streaming platform it works great on any PC regardless of the specs, but if you have a weak internet connection you may run into some issues.

One more thing

Immortals Fenyx Rising is currently available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Google Stadia. If you only have one of these systems then your choice is made for you, but if you can make a choice, it is worth knowing a few things. Obviously, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions of the consoles perform significantly better than the other systems, but the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One still perform well.

The Switch lags a bit behind compared to the other systems, where frame drops are common and a lot of fog is used to cover parts of the map. You can see the difference between the PS5 and Switch versions in this GameXplain comparison video, but keep in mind that some of these issues can be resolved through post-launch patches.

Finally, the last thing I want to discuss is Immortals saves online. Regardless of the platform, you can save your playthrough to a Ubisoft account and then access it on another platform. It’s fast, convenient, and most importantly, great if you want to enjoy the game on Switch on the go while still having the higher fidelity option available from other consoles.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean buying the game for one platform will unlock it for all others, but the feature is still useful to have anyway.
