Windows 10 now includes a taskbar icon called “Meet Now”
What is meeting now?
Microsoft’s “Meet Now” is a Skype feature launched in April 2020 that aims to bring the user-friendly features that have made Zoom hugely popular to the Skype platform. You can start video chats almost instantly via a web link, and others can join in without having to create Skype accounts or download the Skype client software.
Participants only need a link to the meeting, a compatible web browser (Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome) and a working video camera and microphone on their device.
In late 2020, Microsoft added a special “Meet Now” pop-up menu with quick links to Skype in the Windows 10 toolbar, making it easier than ever to make or join video calls from Windows. Let’s see how it works.
People can also join these meetings from an Android phone, iPhone or iPad. When you give them the correct link, they will be prompted to download the Skype app from Microsoft. However, they don’t need to create a Skype account to become a member.

Make a video chat with Meet Now in Windows 10
First, make sure Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome is set as your default web browser. (Currently, the Meet Now feature does not support Firefox.) Next, find the “Meet Now” icon in your taskbar. It looks like a small video camera with curved lines above and below it.
Tip: If you don’t see the Meet Now icon in your taskbar, right-click on the taskbar and select ‘Taskbar Settings’. Click on the link “Turn system icons on or off”. At the bottom of the next page, toggle the switch next to “Meet Now” to “On”.
Click the Meet Now icon in your taskbar. In the small pop-up window that appears, select the “Meet Now” button.
Your default web browser opens a Skype page. You must give the Skype website permission to use your computer’s webcam and microphone. Click on “Allow” to give it access.
You will then see a Skype webpage with a small preview video image, a place to enter your name and a special link that others can use to join the meeting.
Type your name and copy the special invitation link to your clipboard by clicking the “copy” icon next to it. You can then paste the link into a message to share it with others. Or you can click the “Share invitation” button to share the link via your email client or Facebook.
Tip: Be careful with who you share the invite link with – anyone with the link can join the meeting.
When you are ready to start the session, click ‘Start Meeting’.
Then you will see a screen similar to other video conferencing software with buttons to turn off your microphone or camera, send responses or open the chat sidebar.
If you are in the middle of a meeting and want to share the link to the meeting with others who haven’t joined yet, click the “Chat” button.
In the chat sidebar that opens, scroll all the way to the top of the chat history and you will find the invite link. You can then copy it and share it with others who might want to get involved.
When you are done with the session and want to disconnect, click the red “hang up” button (which looks like a vintage telephone receiver in a circle) in the center of the page.
After that, you are free to close your browser tab or window. Anytime you want to host another meeting, just use the “Meet Now” button in the taskbar again.
Join an existing video chat with Meet Now on Windows 10
Before joining an existing video chat with Meet Now, you need a special link or meeting code that the person organizing the meeting has shared with you. It looks something like this (this is just an example):
When you’re done, click on the “Meet Now” icon in your taskbar and select “Join a Meeting” from the small window that appears.
After that, a special Skype page will open in your web browser. Enter the meeting code you received from the person organizing the meeting, then click the “Join” button.
Tip: Once you have copied the link or code to your clipboard, you can paste it into the text field using Ctrl-V on your keyboard or right-click the text field and select “Paste” from the pop-up menu.
If your browser asks for permission to use your camera and microphone, click ‘Allow’.
Then you will see the same screen as if you were starting a new meeting. Enter your name and click ‘Start meeting’.
Then you participate in the meeting. When you are ready to disconnect, click on the red “hang up” button (which looks like a telephone receiver in a circle). Have fun chatting!
