What's new in the 20H1 update of Windows 10, which arrives in the spring of 2020

A Windows 10 20H1 (version 2004) desktop with the new Cortana experience.

Microsoft is already working on the 20H1 update of Windows 10. This is expected somewhere around May 2020, this is Windows 10 version 2004. It is much larger than the November 201

9 update in Windows 10, but still feels like a collection of useful improvements.

This post was updated with features in Windows Insider builds to build 19041.84, released on February 11, 2020. We originally published it on August 28, 2019, and updated it throughout the entire Microsoft development process.

More control over optional updates

View optional updates on Windows Update Settings screen

Windows Update automatically installs many updates, but some updates are optional. Now there is a new screen that displays all these updates in one place.

Updates from hardware drivers, updates from major functions such as 20H1 itself, and monthly non-security quality updates such as C and D updates appear here.

Go to this screen after updating to 20H1 and go to Settings> Update and security> Windows Update> View optional updates. You can then choose which updates you want to install.

Windows Update still automatically installs many hardware driver updates, but sometimes there are additional updates that may not be installed automatically. In the past, you had to dig through Device Manager and select a specific device to update. Now all optional hardware driver updates appear on this screen. Microsoft says: "If you encounter a problem, one of those optional drivers can help."

A new Cortana experience (with typing)

  Cortana & # 39; s new conversation interface on Windows 10.

Microsoft advertises a "new Cortana experience" with a "brand new op chat based user interface ". You can now type searches for Cortana instead of saying them aloud. The history of your conversation with Cortana looks like it was a chat window, so you can view the results of recent questions by opening Cortana from the taskbar.

The Cortana panel is now also a more normal window. You can resize it and move it on your desktop by dragging the title bar just like other windows. It also supports the light and dark themes of Windows 10.

In addition to the new design, Microsoft says it has "Cortana updated with new speech and language models" and "significantly improved performance" from the voice assistant. And soon Microsoft says that you can use Cortana in one of the supported languages, even if your Windows operating system is set to a display language that Cortana does not support.

Microsoft has Cortana features such as jokes, timers and Bing immediate answers. It is currently focusing on a productivity-based function.

Cloud Download for Reinstalling Windows

The Cloud Download option for resetting (or reinstalling) Windows 10.

Windows 10 has a new "Cloud Download" option that you can use when installing resetting your PC to a standard Windows system. When you go to Settings> Update and security> Recovery and choose to reset your PC and delete everything, you can now let Windows know to use "Cloud Download". Instead of reinstalling Windows 10 from the files on your local system, Windows downloads the most up-to-date version of Windows 10 and installs it on your system.

This saves time with subsequent updates. Previously, the only way to do this was to either update Windows 10 before you "reset" your system or by creating new installation media for Windows 10. The reset function of Windows 10 has become much more powerful.

Bandwidth limits for Windows Update

download and upload limit in Mbps for updates to Windows 10.

The Settings app now gives you more control over how much bandwidth is used for downloading Windows updates. In current versions of Windows you can set a bandwidth limit as a percentage of your bandwidth. With Windows 10 20H1 you can set a precise limit for "Absolute bandwidth" in Mbps for a more precise limitation of downloaded updates. This option was previously available in Group Policy, but is now available to everyone in Settings.

To find the bandwidth restriction options for updates on each version of Windows 10, go to Settings> Update and security> Delivery optimization> Advanced options. [19659010] WSL 2 With a Linux kernel

Larry Ewing

The new Windows subsystem for Linux (WSL) is probably the most important feature in Windows 10 20H1. This is WSL version 2 and it is even more powerful than the first version. WSL 2 uses a real Linux kernel to provide an even more powerful, full-featured Linux environment on Windows 10.

Microsoft will build its own Linux kernel and send it with WSL 2, and that Linux kernel will be updated via Windows. You can also build your own Linux kernel and have it used by Windows 10. You don't have to think about this though – WSL 2 has the same user experience as WSL 1 and will "just work" without additional configuration.

WSL 2 promises "dramatic file system performance" and "full system call compatibility." That compatibility means support for technologies such as Docker that would not work on the original WSL 1.

Furthermore, Microsoft has added support for ARM64 devices – in other words, WSL now works in Windows on ARM PCs. The WSL release notes say that this only works "if your CPU / firmware supports virtualization."

More configuration options are also available. For example, you can set the default user account of a Linux distribution in the file /etc/wsl.conf .

A faster Windows search experience

The indexing settings of Windows 10.

Windows 10 & # 39; s May 2019 Update fixed Start menu search. Microsoft did this by using the old Windows search indexer, which runs in the background and scans the files from your PC to create a search database.

Microsoft asked why Insiders disabled the search indexer and received three key areas to improve: "Excessive disk and CPU usage, general performance issues, and low perceived value of the indexer." Microsoft says it now detects peak usage times so that it can better optimize when the indexer is running. For example, it does not run when gaming mode is on, when power-saving mode is on, when power-saving mode is on, when CPU usage is around 80%, when disk usage is higher than 70%, or when battery power is lowered by 50% .

Windows searches are also faster on developers' PCs by default. The Windows search indexer will now exclude "standard global developer folders such as .git, .hg, .svn, .Nuget, and more by default." The performance will improve while compiling and synchronizing code.

Disc type in Task Manager

Disc type displayed on the Performance tab of Task Manager in Windows 10.

Task Manager of Windows 10 now displays your disc type – SSD or HDD. This makes it easier to see which hardware is on your computer and it can help you determine which drive is which if you have multiple drives in your system.

This information is displayed on the Performance tab. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and click on "More Details" to find it.

GPU temperature in Task Manager

That is not the only new function that Task Manager gets. Your GPU temperature is also displayed on the Performance tab of Task Manager. Assuming you have a graphics card with a new enough driver – this must support the WDDM 2.4 driver model – you will also find this information on the status page of your GPU on the Performance tab. This also only works with special graphics cards, no integrated GPU & # 39; s or built-in GPU & # 39; s.

This is simply the newest GPU monitoring function in Task Manager. Previous updates added features such as GPU usage per process, display of general GPU usage, graphics driver version information, graphics memory usage, and hardware details.

A new "tablet experience"

  Windows 10 & # 39; s new tablet mode
Microsoft

has Windows 10 a classic desktop mode and a Windows 8-style tablet mode that even hides your taskbar icons by default. That is not ideal for many people, so 20H1 adds a new interim "tablet experience".

If you are using a 2-in-1 PC with a touch screen and you have not connected a keyboard or mouse, it can make the traditional desktop interface a bit easier to use. For example, the taskbar icons are further apart, Explorer is optimized for touch, and you can use Windows on your desktop.

Microsoft says this is not a substitute for tablet mode, but convertible PCs will no longer be used automatically go to tablet mode when you remove the keyboard or turn it over. Instead, they enter this new touch-optimized experience. Microsoft works back on tablet mode on 2-in-1 devices and makes the classic Windows desktop easier to use on a touchscreen.

<h2> Windows lets you "make your device password-free" </h2>
<p><img class=

With Microsoft new you can "Make your device password-free" with a new option on the Settings> Accounts> Login page. It sounds great and futuristic, but actually it is just a new setting where everyone has to log in to your PC with a pin code or another Windows Hello login method such as face or fingerprint unlocking.

Safe mode now also works with pin code registration. If you have set up Windows Hello to log in with a pin code, you can use that pin code to log in to your PC after booting into safe mode. Previously, Safe Mode had you enter your account password.

Renaming virtual desktops

Renaming a virtual desktop (with emoji) on Windows 10.
Microsoft

Virtual desktops from Windows 10, available in the Task View interface that appears when you run on Windows + Tab can be configured on your keyboard or click on the Task View icon on the taskbar.

Instead of being stuck with the standard names "Desktop 1", "Desktop 2", and so on. you can rename them now. Just click on the name of each virtual desktop at the top of the task display interface and type a new name.

As Microsoft indicates, you can even use emoji & # 39; s in the names. Just press Windows +. (point) to open the emoji picker and enter an emoji. This emoji panel works in almost every text field in Windows 10.

Improved network status information

  Windows 10 20H1 & # 39; s new network status options.

The network status page at Settings> Network and Internet> Status has been redesigned. It now shows all available network interfaces at the top of the page. Both Wi-Fi and Ethernet are shown here, for example, if you have a PC with both.

Microsoft says that this new interface "provides more information about your device's connectivity at a glance, combining multiple pages to give you a clear overview of how you are connected to the Internet." [19659003] Windows displays your data usage for each interface directly on this page, so you don't have to go elsewhere in Settings to see how much data you use.

Built-in support for network camera & # 39; s

The splash screen logo of the Camera app on Windows 10.

Windows 10 has built-in support for IP-based cameras that send their video feeds via your local network, traditionally you needed third-party software to install these camera feeds on Windows 10

This update allows you to add network-based cameras & # 39; s through Settings> Devices> Bluetooth and other devices> Add Bluetooth or other device. If there is a supported camera on your local network, Windows 10 will find it and you can add it to your system with one click.

After the camera has been added, you can use the built-in Camera app (and other Camera apps) to access the network camera. For the time being, Windows 10 only supports cameras that meet the standards used by ONVIF Profile S.

Better control Restart apps upon logon

Windows 10 automatically reopens many applications, including Google Chrome, after you restart your PC. There is now a new option that makes it easier to disable this.

To find this option, go to Settings> Accounts> Login Options. Under Restart Apps, select "Automatically save my restartable apps when I log out and restart them after I sign in" if you want to disable this.

Previously this option was somewhat hidden and merged with the "Use my login details to automatically complete my device & # 39 ;, which reads & # 39; Use my login details to automatically install my device and reopen my apps after a update or restart & # 39; these are now two separate options.

This feature now also works a little better. It now restarts "the majority of" UWP apps and traditional Windows desktop apps.

Disk Cleanup will not delete your Downloads folder

  Disk Cleanup shows the Downloads folder on the November 10 update of Windows 10. "Width =" 650 "height =" 452 "src =" / pagespeed_static / 1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif "onload =" pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon (this); "onerror =" this.onerror = null; pagespeed.lazyLoadImeaSeaverAbayAfbeibleNeVayconFeableSendNo

Microsoft removes the Downloads folder from the classic application. uiming. This option was added to Disk Cleanup with the October 2018 update. Critics said it was too easy to accidentally delete all files in your Downloads folder, especially if you are an experienced user who did not know that this option was added to Disk Cleanup.

With this update, the Downloads folder disappears from Disk Cleanup. You can still use Disk Cleanup to empty your Recycle Bin, delete temporary files, delete old Windows installations and everything else, but the short-term Downloads option will disappear.

The option to clean up your Downloads folder lives on in Storage Sense, available via Settings> System> Storage> Configure storage feel or run it now. It just disappeared from the classic disk cleanup interface.

Paint and WordPad are now optional functions

Microsoft has converted MS Paint and WordPad into "optional functions". Paint and WordPad are still installed by default, but you can remove them to free some space.

Go to Settings> Apps> Apps & Features> Optional Features, and you will see Paint and WordPad in addition to other optional features such as Windows Media Player.

Microsoft Paint takes 11.6 MB and WordPad uses 9.11 MB, so you will not free up much space by removing them. Microsoft originally intended to remove Paint from Windows and distribute it through the Store, but it has abandoned those plans and even updated Paint with new features.

Microsoft has been experimenting for a while with a banner in the Settings app and this is back in 20H1 Insider builds. The new banner appears at the top of the home screen in the Settings window and shows your photo, name and a link to manage your Microsoft account online. It provides quick links to your OneDrive and Windows Update settings and information about their status.

Fortunately, Microsoft did not include ads for Microsoft Rewards (formerly Bing Rewards) here.

The entire linking process is done through the Windows 10 notifications without having to open the Settings app and a notification is displayed less. There is a Close button to close the notification if you do not want to pair a device, and the notification shows more information about the name and type of the device if possible.

This still only works with supported devices such as Microsoft's Surface keyboards and mice, but hopefully it should be on more devices in the future, making the Bluetooth pairing process faster for more PC users.

To access this option, go to Find Settings> Easily Accessible> Text Cursor. Switch the new & # 39; Text cursor indicator & # 39; in, choose a size and choose a color that you can easily see. You can select any desired color.

If you are interested in this option, you may also want to adjust the size and color of your mouse pointer. Microsoft added this option again in the May 10 update in Windows 10.

The Language Language Settings page and Windows 10 Language> Settings i s reorganized to make it easier to use and understand. For example, it now shows you the default languages selected for Windows, apps and websites, your keyboard, voice, and regional settings at the top right of the screen.

This update contains much better support for non-English languages, too. The & # 39; typing intelligence & # 39; functions of the SwiftKey touch keyboard now support 39 different languages. That means more convenient auto-correction and keyboard text predictions. The improved text prediction works even when text prediction is enabled for hardware keyboards.

Dictation also gets better. Microsoft now supports more languages when using dictation – to use it, press Windows + H while typing in any text field.

Microsoft has done a lot of work on the East Asian Microsoft Input Method Editors (IME & # 39; s). There is a new Japanese IME and improvements to the Chinese and Korean IME's.

Other changes

Here are a few:

  • New DirectX 12 features : The 20H1 update of Windows 10 currently includes examples of developers of DirectX 12 features such as DirectX Raytracing Tier 1.1, DirectX Mesh Shader and more. Game developers will ultimately be able to benefit from this to improve their games.
  • More Kaomoji: Microsoft has added more kaomoji to the Windows 10 emoji panel, which you can open by pressing Windows +. (dot) or Windows +; (semicolon.) For example, you will now find ヾ (⌐ ■ _ ■) ノ ♪ in the list.
  • Mouse cursor speed in Settings : with Windows 10 you can now set the speed of your mouse cursor from the Settings app at Settings> Devices> Mouse. Previously this option was only available in the Control Panel.
  • Better account image settings : Windows 10 now makes it easier to set up your account photo in Windows and in various Microsoft services. Go to Settings> Accounts> Your info to set up an account photo. When you set an image here, Windows will now quickly update it, both on your local Windows computer and in various Microsoft services – assuming you are logged into Windows 10 with a Microsoft account.
  • Optional functions get better : The page with optional functions under Settings> Apps and functions> Optional functions gets a better interface. You can now select and install multiple functions at once, search for available functions and sort them in different ways. You can see the date each function was installed and the status of the function installation at the top of this page.
  • Wi-Fi Warning Redesign : Microsoft also says it changes how open Wi-Fi networks appear in the Wi-Fi list. Windows 10 no longer displays the warning message & # 39; Other people can see information that you send over this network & # 39; before they connect to an open WiFi network, which is, according to Microsoft, confusing. Instead, there is a new icon for secure Wi-Fi networks to emphasize more clearly that you need to connect to it.
  • Improved accessibility : Microsoft has also updated accessibility features with more new options and improvements. For example, there is a new command in Narrator to give a summary of a web page (Narrator + S).
  • Installing MSIX files without sideloading : System administrators will discover that installing an MSIX file no longer requires enabling sideloading in Settings or through Group Policy. Previously, installing this was required to enable sideloading, just like on Android. As long as the MSIX file is signed, a Windows 10 system can install it just like any other application. Companies can still disable this type of sideloading through policy settings, but that is no longer the default mode.
  • Windows PowerShell ISE : PowerShell & # 39; s integrated script editor is now a & # 39; Feature on Demand & # 39 ;. It remains installed by default and you can manage it via Settings> Apps> Apps and functions> Optional functions.

With so many months to go, more features may appear in future Windows Insider previews. We will update this article as they do.
