Microsoft is already working on the 20H1 update of Windows 10. This is expected somewhere around May 2020, this is Windows 10 version 2004. It is much larger than the November 201
9 update in Windows 10, but still feels like a collection of useful improvements.
This post was updated with features in Windows Insider builds to build 19041.84, released on February 11, 2020. We originally published it on August 28, 2019, and updated it throughout the entire Microsoft development process.
More control over optional updates
Windows Update automatically installs many updates, but some updates are optional. Now there is a new screen that displays all these updates in one place.
Updates from hardware drivers, updates from major functions such as 20H1 itself, and monthly non-security quality updates such as C and D updates appear here.
Go to this screen after updating to 20H1 and go to Settings> Update and security> Windows Update> View optional updates. You can then choose which updates you want to install.
Windows Update still automatically installs many hardware driver updates, but sometimes there are additional updates that may not be installed automatically. In the past, you had to dig through Device Manager and select a specific device to update. Now all optional hardware driver updates appear on this screen. Microsoft says: "If you encounter a problem, one of those optional drivers can help."
A new Cortana experience (with typing)
Microsoft advertises a "new Cortana experience" with a "brand new op chat based user interface ". You can now type searches for Cortana instead of saying them aloud. The history of your conversation with Cortana looks like it was a chat window, so you can view the results of recent questions by opening Cortana from the taskbar.
The Cortana panel is now also a more normal window. You can resize it and move it on your desktop by dragging the title bar just like other windows. It also supports the light and dark themes of Windows 10.
In addition to the new design, Microsoft says it has "Cortana updated with new speech and language models" and "significantly improved performance" from the voice assistant. And soon Microsoft says that you can use Cortana in one of the supported languages, even if your Windows operating system is set to a display language that Cortana does not support.
Microsoft has Cortana features such as jokes, timers and Bing immediate answers. It is currently focusing on a productivity-based function.
Cloud Download for Reinstalling Windows
Windows 10 has a new "Cloud Download" option that you can use when installing resetting your PC to a standard Windows system. When you go to Settings> Update and security> Recovery and choose to reset your PC and delete everything, you can now let Windows know to use "Cloud Download". Instead of reinstalling Windows 10 from the files on your local system, Windows downloads the most up-to-date version of Windows 10 and installs it on your system.
This saves time with subsequent updates. Previously, the only way to do this was to either update Windows 10 before you "reset" your system or by creating new installation media for Windows 10. The reset function of Windows 10 has become much more powerful.

Bandwidth limits for Windows Update
The Settings app now gives you more control over how much bandwidth is used for downloading Windows updates. In current versions of Windows you can set a bandwidth limit as a percentage of your bandwidth. With Windows 10 20H1 you can set a precise limit for "Absolute bandwidth" in Mbps for a more precise limitation of downloaded updates. This option was previously available in Group Policy, but is now available to everyone in Settings.
To find the bandwidth restriction options for updates on each version of Windows 10, go to Settings> Update and security> Delivery optimization> Advanced options. WSL 2 With a Linux kernel
The new Windows subsystem for Linux (WSL) is probably the most important feature in Windows 10 20H1. This is WSL version 2 and it is even more powerful than the first version. WSL 2 uses a real Linux kernel to provide an even more powerful, full-featured Linux environment on Windows 10.
Microsoft will build its own Linux kernel and send it with WSL 2, and that Linux kernel will be updated via Windows. You can also build your own Linux kernel and have it used by Windows 10. You don't have to think about this though – WSL 2 has the same user experience as WSL 1 and will "just work" without additional configuration.
WSL 2 promises "dramatic file system performance" and "full system call compatibility." That compatibility means support for technologies such as Docker that would not work on the original WSL 1.
Furthermore, Microsoft has added support for ARM64 devices – in other words, WSL now works in Windows on ARM PCs. The WSL release notes say that this only works "if your CPU / firmware supports virtualization."
More configuration options are also available. For example, you can set the default user account of a Linux distribution in the file /etc/wsl.conf .

A faster Windows search experience
Windows 10 & # 39; s May 2019 Update fixed Start menu search. Microsoft did this by using the old Windows search indexer, which runs in the background and scans the files from your PC to create a search database.
Microsoft asked why Insiders disabled the search indexer and received three key areas to improve: "Excessive disk and CPU usage, general performance issues, and low perceived value of the indexer." Microsoft says it now detects peak usage times so that it can better optimize when the indexer is running. For example, it does not run when gaming mode is on, when power-saving mode is on, when power-saving mode is on, when CPU usage is around 80%, when disk usage is higher than 70%, or when battery power is lowered by 50% .
Windows searches are also faster on developers' PCs by default. The Windows search indexer will now exclude "standard global developer folders such as .git, .hg, .svn, .Nuget, and more by default." The performance will improve while compiling and synchronizing code.
Disc type in Task Manager
Task Manager of Windows 10 now displays your disc type – SSD or HDD. This makes it easier to see which hardware is on your computer and it can help you determine which drive is which if you have multiple drives in your system.
This information is displayed on the Performance tab. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and click on "More Details" to find it.
GPU temperature in Task Manager
That is not the only new function that Task Manager gets. Your GPU temperature is also displayed on the Performance tab of Task Manager. Assuming you have a graphics card with a new enough driver – this must support the WDDM 2.4 driver model – you will also find this information on the status page of your GPU on the Performance tab. This also only works with special graphics cards, no integrated GPU & # 39; s or built-in GPU & # 39; s.
This is simply the newest GPU monitoring function in Task Manager. Previous updates added features such as GPU usage per process, display of general GPU usage, graphics driver version information, graphics memory usage, and hardware details.

A new "tablet experience"
has Windows 10 a classic desktop mode and a Windows 8-style tablet mode that even hides your taskbar icons by default. That is not ideal for many people, so 20H1 adds a new interim "tablet experience".
If you are using a 2-in-1 PC with a touch screen and you have not connected a keyboard or mouse, it can make the traditional desktop interface a bit easier to use. For example, the taskbar icons are further apart, Explorer is optimized for touch, and you can use Windows on your desktop.
Microsoft says this is not a substitute for tablet mode, but convertible PCs will no longer be used automatically go to tablet mode when you remove the keyboard or turn it over. Instead, they enter this new touch-optimized experience. Microsoft works back on tablet mode on 2-in-1 devices and makes the classic Windows desktop easier to use on a touchscreen.

FPS in the Xbox Game Bar
When you open the "Search Home" window by clicking the search box on the taskbar, you will see new "quick searches" at the bottom, giving you one-click access to things like the weather, top news and new movies.
