WhatsApp spotted test a reverse image search function to address fake news – Technology News, Firstpost

In an attempt to combat false news, WhatsApp seems to work for a new "image search" feature that allows users to verify the source of an image shared over a group or personal chat.

The feature will not be displayed directly but according to WABetaInfo the Facebook-owned messaging software tests this new feature on its WhatsApp Beta build version 2.1

9.73 for Android. As noted in a blog post the new feature seems to use Google's reverse image search function to track the image source.

WhatsApp discovered that a reverse image search function could be managed to address fake news

Although there is a beta version of WhatsApp, the new feature is still not available for public testing which means that users on the beta track cannot test the feature yet.

The image is said to appear in the extended three-point menu when receiving an image on WhatsApp.

With WhatsApp who is under the government's strict eyes before 2019 Lok Sabha election, the introduction of the function can be part of the company's struggle against false news . However, it is still to be seen how soon WhatsApp announces the function, given that it is very little time before the election is going on.
