Spam affects everyone in one way or another. Have you ever wondered where does spam actually come from ? Where did spam come from before your email inbox or computer was clogged?
I recently came across interesting spam information from ICSA Labs, an independent testing organization that produces a weekly report on the Top 10 countries sending spam . Their reports indicate the countries where spam comes from during a certain week and how the spam volume of each country varies over time.
Top countries where spam comes from
The table below from ICSA Labs shows India, Russia, Brazil and the United States the top four countries where spam originated in the weeks of 9-1
Spam Origins over time
Another chart from ICSA Labs shows the weekly spam data from from January 2010 through August 2010 and illustrates the fluctuations in where spam is coming from for a long time. While Ukraine and South Korea have remained relatively consistent as sources for the emergence of spam, the volume of spam originating from Brazil, Russia, India and the United States has varied much more dramatically.
Ultimately, this information does not necessarily reduce your amount of spam or make you no longer protected against spam. It does, however, offer some perspective on the global nature of spam and the importance of technology to block and filter spam to minimize the problems it can cause. Moreover, you can now better answer the question "Where does spam come from".
