Where to buy the PS5 on Black Friday: Check here for restocking at Amazon, Walmart, Target and GameStop

This story is part of Christmas gift guide 2020, CNET’s gift selection with expert advice, reviews and recommendations for the latest tech gifts for you and your family.

There is no doubt that the PS5 is great, but it is essentially impossible to actually buy because of the enormous demand and scarcity of stock. In the weeks leading up to Black Friday, we’ve seen retailers like Walmart, Best Buy, and GameStop all teasing the availability of PS5 and Xbox inventory, then watching the stock come in and sell out more or less immediately. Getting one of these next-gen consoles in time for the holidays doesn̵

7;t bode well.

As you may recall, Sony’s PlayStation 5 officially arrived in the US on Nov. 12 with an online-only launch and since then it has been out of stock at all the usual retailers including Walmart, Target, Amazon, GameStop and Best Buy. That goes for both versions of the PS5. The $ 400 digital version and the $ 500 model with Blu-ray are both nearly impossible to get. (If you have good broadband and don’t need optical discs – for Blu-ray movies, used games or old PS4 games – we recommend go with the $ 400.)

While most retailers don’t usually know when to expect to have units for sale, there are a few more ahead of time. For example, Walmart has been keeping customers up to date through its Twitter feed as to when it drops new inventory. Antonline is doing much the same on its own Twitter feed, but with less notice. Keep in mind that while you can only get the console from Walmart, Antonline only sells bundles.

At this point, there’s no indication of stock at any of the major retailers, so your chances of scoring a console aren’t, shall we say, encouraging. Nevertheless, we will keep this page up to date with news of any stock declines. And we’ve compiled a list of retailers that could replenish the PS5 for the rest of the year.

And I think I’m speaking on behalf of everyone when I say Hey retailers, for the love of PS5, please implement a Captcha system on your checkout page to make sure only people order your products.
