Where to buy the Xbox Series X: Top up updates to Best Buy, Amazon, Target, Walmart, and more

This story is part of Christmas gift guide 2020, CNET’s gift choice with expert advice, reviews, and recommendations for the latest tech gifts for you and your family.

Trying to get an Xbox Series X before the clock ends on 2020? So do a million of your best friends, and unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be nearly enough inventory to make that happen. It’s been a hot minute since a major retailer had some inventory, but Best Buy had some consoles to offer today. That was encouraging news for anyone who has been trying to secure a unit since the US launch on Nov. 1

0. But as I write this, mid-day, there don’t seem to be many consoles available.

Currently, there is nowhere in stock other than Best Buy, both due to the insatiable consumer demand and the fact that resellers beat the average consumer. But as of this morning around 10 a.m.PT, Best Buy started offering Xboxes to at least some customers.

But sales are going as well as you’d expect. Despite yellow “add to cart” buttons appearing on the product page, Best Buy provided pop-ups to many users stating that in some cases it was unable to add the item to the cart and increased inventory “every few minutes” would be released. Later in the day, the yellow ‘add to cart’ button was kept, but now a message is displayed saying ‘Due to high demand, we let everyone go through one more step before it can be added’, and the extra step has no consoles delivered in our informal tests. So while the sale doesn’t seem over yet, don’t count on getting an Xbox.

As for other retailers, we’ll be keeping an eye on Twitter and other news sources and updating you on what other retailers like Walmart, Amazon, GameStop and Target are planning here, while keeping our expectations in check. Microsoft confirmed that on November 16 Xbox stock could be tight until April 2021.

What follows is a list of the most important retailers selling the Xbox Series X. Our advice is to look for the $ 500 retail price and avoid those expensive shopping bundles (which include external controllers, accessories, and games).

Xbox Series X: Check the stock replenishment

Best Buy was the last retailer to return in the September pre-order days, but is now ready for your Xbox Series X purchase if stock permits.

Amazon sells the Xbox Series X and the cheaper Series S from the same product page.

GameStop had hailed “a very limited number of Xbox Series X and S console bundles for sale,” but they are currently out of print.

Walmart does a good job of listing availability windows for PS5 and Xbox on its Twitter feed. You may also want to visit the store’s Xbox landing page for both new consoles.

If you want the latest Xbox Series X news, there’s probably nowhere better than Microsoft’s own Xbox Series X homepage. Here you will find the latest specifications, announced game titles, details about the new controller and more.

This is Target’s product page for the Xbox Series X.

Here you can buy the Xbox Series X from Newegg if the retailer has stock.

Are you getting desperate yet? Are you willing to pay a premium of hundreds of dollars over the list price? Listen, we wouldn’t do this and we don’t recommend that you do it. But if you want to go that path, StockX is a reputable eBay-style site that lets you buy and sell new Xbox and PS5 models – as long as you’re willing to shell out over $ 750.
