If you already have a heart for the new flagship phone from Samsung, you have made a decision about your brand. But you still have to deal with a choice between three expensive models: the standard S20, the larger S20 + and the gigantic S20 Ultra. Which is for you? Let's split it up.
Size and screen
The Galaxy S20, S20 + and S20 Ultra have screen sizes of 6.3, 6.7 and 6.9 inch diagonal respectively. They all use the same 1
They are all big phones, but of course you want to know the relative formats. The S20 is 151.7 mm long, a hair of less than six centimeters. The S20 + is 161.9, the Ultra is 166.9. So it's about the difference between the width of an adult's finger, from the smallest to the largest.
Do you want a more direct image? Here they are all compared to a coke can.
If the size interests you, whether for use with your hand size or in your pocket, we recommend that you take all three models in your hands before they are released. Best Buy and Career stores must be available well before the launch on March 6.
Storage and RAM
All three models of the S20 come with ample 12 GB RAM, 128 GB storage and a MicroSD card slot. But the S20 + can be upgraded to 512 GB storage (an additional $ 100) and the S20 Ultra gets a model with both stimulated RAM and storage, 12 GB and 512 GB (+ $ 200). They all use the same high-end processor, but where you buy it will probably determine whether it uses a Qualcomm or Snapdragon chip. All models have 5G capacity.
If storage is all you are looking for, adding a large MicroSD card is the cheapest way to go. But if you use a Galaxy phone now and your apps often shut down in the background, that extra RAM might be enough to justify an upgrade to the Ultra, especially if you're already considering it for the supercamera's.
The S20 series starts with a pretty sturdy 4000 mAh battery for the S20 and then goes in steps for the S20 + at 4500 mAh and S20 Ultra at an even 5000 mAh. Based on the same usage, the larger phones have to last a little longer with the same charge, because the screen no longer pushes pixels and the power consumption on AMOLED panels is quite efficient.
There is a distinguishing factor here: loading speed. The S20 and S20 + support charging at 25 watts, for which the charger in the box is suitable. But the S20 Ultra can charge even faster at 45 watts – that comes in an ultra-portable laptop range. According to the Samsung press release, the S20 Ultra has the same charger as the other phones, so you have to pay even more for that privilege for fast charging.
Camera & # 39; s
Here is the great differentiation. The S20 comes with three cameras on the rear, the S20 + and S20 Ultra have four. But how those cameras are used is a bit different. Here is the direct comparison of the Samsung press release – also note that the S20 Ultra gets an improved front camera. All three telephones can capture 8K video.
So the S20 and S20 + are fairly similar, but the middle child gets an extra "Depth-of-view sensor". This is a feature introduced on the S10 series last year: it helps the other sensors to measure the distance from the phone to an outdoor object. In terms of lay people, it enables the phone to perform more precise background and foreground separation, both in standard recordings and in video. In even shorter terms, it makes use of some very nice software to make images look better.
The S20 Ultra is Samsung's answer to the iPhone 11 Pro, with its wide-angle camera upgraded to an insane 108 megapixels. In combination with a 48MP telephoto lens, the level of detail that the phone can capture is pretty amazing.
With those extra megapixels, Samsung can boast a "100X zoom level" on the S20 Ultra, versus "30X zoom" on the other models. But keep in mind, this is essentially digital cropping. The optical elements in smartphone cameras are amazing, but they are not magical and they cannot yet replicate the telephoto power of a full DSLR or mirrorless camera. The more you zoom in (read: cropping) on that huge image, the lower your quality will be.
In short, that superzoom function is probably not worth $ 200-400 extra, unless you often find yourself trying the "zoom and improve" trick of each detective show. Read this article for more information about the S20's camera and image processing systems
For your convenience, here is a comparison of the S20 models and upgrades with prices.
Which is for you?
The S20 Phones have much greater functionality than the S10 or Note 10 series models, to be honest, there is a lot of gray area here, and only a few cases where a specific model is the clear winner.
If you have small hands or small pockets : Galaxy S20, sure, even that can be too big for you – maybe the Galaxy Z Flip is more attractive?
If you have a limited budget: None, really, but the Galaxy S20 is the cheapest You can lower that price with trade-in, and both Samsung and retailer partners offer financing. Or you can go to the S10 series, which has just received a price reduction.
If you want the most storage for the lowest price: the Galaxy S20 + offers an upgrade from $ 100 to 512 GB. But it is worth noting that all three MicroSD cards support up to 1 TB.
If you want to trim that crazy zoom: Galaxy S20 Ultra. It is considerably improved compared to the other models.
If you always want to perform ALL APPS: opt for the Galaxy S20 Ultra with the improved storage and RAM. 16 GB in a phone is insane, but we're not going to judge you.
When the battery is nearly empty: All three phones charge super fast, but the Galaxy S20 Ultra has the largest battery and almost twice the charging speed of the others, with the right adapter.
