Which iPad should you buy for Black Friday 2019?

Choosing an iPad this year may seem strange, but it has a logic.

This story is part of Black Friday 2019 our summary of the best deals on today's technology.

Among Apple products there is always a headliner for big discounts: the iPad. Apple's tablet line has become bigger and more confusing every year, but there is good news for every potential iPad shopper this year: all options are quite large and iPad discounts are many . It's just a matter of how much you want to pay.

Unlike last year, Apple has not released a new version of the top-end iPad Pro . But the recent 10.2-inch budget line iPad is better than ever. Or do you need the Mini ? Or, the iPad Air ?

Let's dive into it.

The 10.2-inch iPad is quite good.

iPad 10.2-inch (2019): the best for most

The 10.2-inch model is the choice of CNET for a reason: although it is an older A10 processor , it works perfectly well with the latest iPadOS, has a slightly larger screen, supports the Apple Pencil and now works with Apple & # 39; s older Smart Connector keyboard accessories. It is also for sale. However, I would consider the 128 GB model above 32 GB, especially if you plan to download movies. The ideal size that I would have recommended would have been 64 GB … which Apple obviously does not sell.

iPad (2018): almost the same as the 10.2-inch iPad

You can save even more by getting last year's model from the entry-level iPad, which has the same A10- processor (and also supports Apple Pencil). If it is for sale, of course, what it may not be.

iPad Air (2019): Step beyond basic

The difference between the 10.2-inch entry-level iPad and the iPad Air released this year is actually a better A12- processor and a slightly larger screen (10.5 inch). It is also a bit thinner. Anyone who wants a little more graphic oomph for photo or video work could find a way to divide the difference between the standard iPad and the iPad Pro.

The iPad Pro 2017 is just like the iPad Air 2019, with a few extra & # 39; s

Save yourself the headache and know that the 10.5-inch iPad Air 2019 is a slightly more budget version of the 10.5-inch iPad Pro 2017 . The Pro from 2017 has a faster scrolling 120Hz display, better quad speakers and slightly different cameras. If you can get it in some way for less than the Air above, it's definitely worth it! The 2017 Pro & # 39; s of 2017 are for sale below, but at a higher cost than the iPad Air.

iPad Pro (2018): the chicest option, but …

For the right price, the iPad Pro from last year is still a good choice. The A12X processor is extremely powerful, it has Face ID (which is great on an iPad), it supports newer pencil accessories that stay on the side for charging, the optional keyboard cover is great (and expensive), and it supports USB C.

iPad Mini (2019): Not a bad travel proposal

The smaller 7.9-inch iPad was upgraded this year with an A12 processor and pencil support, and it is a great smaller tablet. It is normally too expensive to justify the iPad entry, but sales offers can make it a tempting travel gadget. However, typing is not great.

Consider at least 64 GB of storage space

Some of the standard iPads start with only 32 GB, which is unsuccessful. Some models start with 64 GB, which is acceptable. If you download movies for travel or plan to take a lot of games on board, consider 128 GB. I would not consider 256 GB and more unless you are a video editor.

For children, Fire tablets or Chromebooks are worth considering.

Amazon's always crazy tablet sales on Fire tablets are tempting if you have Amazon Prime or live in the Amazon ecosystem. As ultra-budget tablets for videos & games, they are completely fine.

Chromebooks are excellent choices as safe child-friendly laptop alternatives, or for anyone who might want a laptop-type browser without a full computer price.

iPad at any price?

If you treat yourself, last year's iPad Pro is a fantastic laptop alternative, provided you can live in Apple's controlled iOS world (iPadOS, the name of the iPad-focused iOS 13 update has a much better browser this year and improved pencil support and file access). Apple might be able to update the iPad Pro in the spring of next year, so maybe you should also consider buying an IOU.

Mobile? Skip

The extra $ 129 for an LTE antenna (and the monthly cost of a mobile subscription to the iPad) is not worth it unless you die to use LTE on a tablet or have someone paying the bill. Place your phone instead.

Save some money for dongles and pencils and such

Unfortunately, your purchase does not end with the iPad alone. You want a case for that delicate tablet, and probably one of Apple & # 39; s Pencil styluses (the old one for most iPads and the new one for the 2018 Pro Pro). A keyboard cover is handy and also costs extra. If you get the USB-C iPad Pro, you also want a few dongles (such as one for a headphone jack).
