Silk pillowcases aren’t exactly cheap (usually over $ 50) – so to find out if they’re worth paying the extra money, I spoke with experts to discuss the potential beauty benefits, including a dermatologist, hair stylists, and a beauty expert who founded a skincare brand. What Makes It A Silk Pillowcase?
Most pillowcases are made of cotton or microfiber and come in one. You can also buy silk or satin pillowcases, both of which have a softer texture than cotton and microfiber and are intended to give you better hair or skin.
Silk pillowcases are made from, well, silk, a natural silkworm protein fiber that is soft and breathable, meaning it lets air through. Silk is more expensive than cotton and other types of fiber, which is why silk pillowcases are also more expensive than others.
Satin pillowcases are cheaper than silk because satin can be made from a variety of different fibers that are woven in a certain way to give the “lustrous” satin feel and effect, according to manufacturer Lily Silk. Satin is usually made of polyester and has a similar smooth texture to silk, but is generally less breathable.
Benefits of Silk Pillowcases for Her
Most of us wake up in the morning with crazy hair, which can be annoying if you spent a lot of time styling your hair the night before. That’s because when you move in your sleep, your hair rubs against your pillowcase, creating friction that can lead to tangles and even breakage. Silk pillowcases can help maintain your style and keep your hair softer than a traditional cotton pillowcase, according to hair stylists, because they cause less friction on your hair.
“Silk pillowcases reduce friction and absorb less moisture, so they can reduce frizz and help you retain moisture [in your hair] all night long, ”said Joseph Maine, celebrity hair stylist and co-founder of Trademark Beauty.
All the different hair types that can benefit from silk pillowcases, but those with fine, curly, or blonde hair may find it particularly helpful, according to Shelly Aguirre, stylist at Maxine Salon in Chicago. “Blonde hair tends to be more fragile, so the silk helps prevent more damage. Curly hair also tends to get frizzy from the friction of cotton, so the silk helps the hair to ‘slide’,” says Aguirre.
If you have oily hair, a silk pillowcase may not be the best choice, because a cotton pillowcase absorbs oil better, Aguirre said. Silk pillowcases are more beneficial if you have dry hair or breakage.
Benefits of silk pillowcase for the skin
According to Heather Marianna, beauty expert and founder of Beauty Kitchen, silk pillowcases can help acne-prone people since the silk pillowcase causes less friction on your face at night than cotton. “Being a soft fabric, it provides relief for even the most sensitive skin,” says Marianna.
When you shop for silk pillowcases, you’ll notice a lot of marketing claims that the pillowcases can make your skin look better and prevent wrinkles, but according to dermatologist Caren Campbell, the science behind the claims isn’t solid. While silk pillowcases have not been proven to reduce wrinkles, pillowcases may be copper-infused, according to a small isolated study.
Campbell encourages patients to focus on the generaland skincare routines instead of pillowcases to get the desired results. “It’s more important to have good sleep hygiene and sleep well because not getting enough sleep shortens the telomeres, which are a marker for aging your chromosomes,” Campbell says.
When it comes to acne, “the better option is to do a good, science-based acne skincare routine that contains a retinoid and benzoyl peroxide,” Campbell says. For concerns about aging skin or wrinkles, she recommends “an anti-aging routine with mineral sunscreen, retinoid, and antioxidant, as well as lifestyle choices that prevent aging, such as avoiding the sun, smoking, exercise, and a healthy diet,” she says.
