Why has Microsoft discontinued support for Windows 7?

Microsoft has long-standing Fixed Lifestyle policies for many of its products. For each version of its operating system, the company offers a minimum of 10 years of support (a minimum of five years of basic support, followed by five years of extended support). Both types include security and program updates, online self-help topics, and additional help that you can pay for.

Windows 7 was released in October 2009, so its 10-year lifecycle has come to an end. Windows 10 was released in 2015 and extended support for the latest OS version is expected to end in 2025.

Will my Windows 7 computer stop working?

Your Windows 7 computer will continue to run, but Microsoft will not provide security updates or fixes or technical support for any issues, putting your computer at greater risk for viruses and malware that can circulate to take advantage of any flaws discovered later.

That is why it is important that you switch to an OS version that Microsoft still puts resources behind.

Should I switch to Windows 10?

No one can force you to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, but it’s a really good idea to do that – the main reason is security. Without security updates or fixes, you put your computer at risk – especially dangerous, since many forms of malware target Windows devices.

Windows 10 also has a number of built-in security tools: Windows Defender Antivirus protects against malware and spyware via email, apps, the cloud and the internet, while Windows Hello provides a password-free login option to unlock your devices with your face or a fingerprint reader. A Find My Device service can remotely lock and wipe your Windows device, or map the location of your device.

Isn’t Windows 10 pretty buggy?

Some people were hesitant to make the switch due to reports of various bugs in previous versions of Windows 10. But Microsoft has made several changes to the update approach as of the May 2019 release, including slower deployments with additional testing, more options to pause updates, and more disclosure of known issues so your experience should be smoother.

Many of the problems were due to updates happening more frequently, Gartner Research analyst Steve Kleynhans said. “But overall, most users seem quite happy with the operating system and love the experience it brings, especially on newer devices,” he added.

What is actually the difference between Windows 7 and Windows 10?

In addition to a range of security tools, Windows 10 also offers more features.
