If you’ve ever forgotten to return a Blockbuster rental (or traded it with a tape you didn̵
First reported by OKC-FOX, former Oklahoma resident Caron McBride had to call the Cleveland County District Attorney’s Office to resolve a “problem” before updating her permit. The attorney’s office told her that because she did not return a 1999 Sabrina the teenage witch rent, she was charged with embezzlement and had a search warrant on her head.
I had lived with a young man, this was more than 20 years ago. He had two kids, daughters of eight, ten or eleven years old, and I think he was going to get it and not take it back or anything. I’ve never seen that show in all my life, just not my cup of tea. Meanwhile, I am a wanted criminal for a VHS tape.
But Caron wasn’t the one who hired Sabrina the teenage witch. It was probably rented by a roommate who forgot to return it. She was not made aware of the charge or warrant, which employers likely saw during background checks. Caron says she was randomly fired from a few jobs, probably because of the embezzlement charge.
The company Caron “ rented ” the tape from closed in 2008, but Cleveland County could still sue Caron if they wanted to. Fortunately, the district attorney’s office dismissed the charges.
