If you thought, “Amazon can’t get bigger”, you are in for a surprise. The company begins selling prescription drugs on its site, offering Prime members two days at no additional cost. And even if you don̵
The timing couldn’t be more perfect. Many of us spend most of our time at home, and more than ever online shopping has become an integral part of our daily lives. Being able to open an app on your phone, search for the exact prescriptions you need, compare prices with or without insurance, and have it shipped to you in 48 hours without ever leaving your bank is wild.
The transition to the pharmaceutical industry has been a long time coming for Amazon, which bought the online pharmacy company PillPack in 2018. Currently, both companies are still operated separately. An Amazon spokesperson (via Vox) says customers with chronic illness who take multiple prescriptions per day “should still order directly through PillPack.”
But for now, Amazon wants to focus on the mainstream, for those who need things like anxiety medications or blood pressure pills. If you want to use the online store for your prescriptions, tell your doctor to send them to Amazon Pharmacy as if it were a different physical location.
And if you’re a Prime member and want to buy drugs without insurance, Amazon uses Inside Rx to offer those discounts. The company has also built more than 50,000 relationships with retailers such as CVS, Costco, Walgreens and Walmart, allowing Prime members to pick up their medications in more urgent situations where you can’t wait for two-day delivery.
Regardless of your thoughts on Amazon, it has become super useful in a time when we’re all stuck at home. Prescription drugs are just another thing that doesn’t require you to leave your home.
