You missed the deadline for direct deposit of the IRS stimulus. What happens to your payment now?

This week, the IRS stopped accepting bank deposits of direct deposits into the Get My Payment portal. If you managed to sneak in before noon on May 13 to fill out a direct deposit form, you still need to have your stimulus check sent to your bank account or debit card. However, if you missed Wednesday's deadline, we can show you what to expect on how you will receive your payment.

The IRS third week of April began sending coronavirus stimulus payments to eligible US Residents, either by mail or direct deposit. For many, the IRS said it will use direct deposit information it has on file to issue checks. Until Wednesday, it also had an online form that allowed you to provide wire transfer information for your bank account.

How will my check arrive by post or direct deposit?

Now that the IRS says it will no longer accept direct deposit information, the federal agency said it will continue to transfer relief money to bank accounts and focus on sending paper checks, which should arrive in late May and June . Here's how to find out if you're receiving a check by mail or directly to your account if you haven't set up a direct deposit using the Get My Payment tool.

If you filed tax in 2018 or 2019 and include direct deposit information: You're all set. The IRS should automatically deposit your check into the bank account you provided with your tax return.

If you filed in 2018 or 2019 but did not include direct deposit information: The IRS will email you your payment

If the bank account you put on your tax return is not more active: The IRS will automatically send your check to the last address it has for you.

If you entered your bank account details Tuesday this week: The IRS said your payment date will be available in Get My Payment on Saturday.

If you entered your bank details after Tuesday and before noon ET on Wednesday: Your payment date must be available from the following Saturday.

When will I receive my check?

The IRS said it will make payments for the rest of 2020. If you don't receive payment this year – or if you should receive a larger payment than you received, for example, because of a new child – the IRS said you can claim your allocated stimulus money next year by filing a tax return for 2020.

Hopefully you get your payment much faster than that. You can use the Get My Payment portal to see your payment schedule .

Note that the IRS sometimes even sends you a check by mail, even if you manage to enter your bank details because the payment has already been processed. The IRS said it can take up to 14 days to receive payment if this is the case.
